My husband and I decided before planning our wedding that the food had to be amazing so we met with a variety of different, well known vendors to meet this requirement. Out of everyone, there wasn't a doubt in our mind that Root Cellar was a cut above the rest. From the initial tasting to the day of the event, the food was consistently delicious and they were able to easily accommodate the dietary restrictions of some of our guests. Our guest list had an insane mix of cultures and tastes, and they were able to meet every one of our needs regardless of the type of cuisine was requested. On top of all that, they handled our rentals for the event and worked with us to achieve the exact look we wanted at a very affordable price. If you love food and are slightly overwhelmed by everything you have to plan out for your event, then this is the easiest choice you will make!

We were thrilled with the quality and presentation of the food. Several guests remarked on how great the meal was. The tasting and booking process was easy from start to finish. They even added a beautiful fruit and cheese table! Our expectations were more than satisfied. Highly recommended - especially if fresh, farm to table food is important to you.

There are a ton of catering options out there. I’ll be honest, I picked Root Cellar because their prices were reasonable for a plated dinner, but more so because they were actually RESPONSIVE to emails, unlike so many caterers you will deal with. With that being said, the food for Root Cellar was outstanding. We don’t live in San Diego, so we took the word of our wedding planner that the food was actually good, as we never were able to do a tasting prior. Root Cellar was great about making some customized appetizers, which our guests still rave about to this day. They blew away my expectations for the plated portion of meal for the reception. The portions were generous and everyone (including the people who had the vegetarian option) raved about the food. Thank you Root Cellar for making our day that much more special!

Fantastic!! We hired Root Cellar for our wedding and they were superb. Their prices are very reasonable. The food was delicious and fresh and the team, especially Jessica, was amazing to work with! She was extremely responsive and willing to shift things around when we had a few last minute cancellations, additions, and meal changes. The service at the wedding was excellent. We look forward to hiring them again for our future catering needs!

Jamie, Marie and the entire Root Cellar team are AMAZING. We went up the road to their farm and greenhouse in Leucadia, to taste a menu that we selected for our wedding at the Darlington House, this September. It set the tone and surpassed my expectations (the bacon wrapped peaches are a must!). On our big day, everything from tray passed hors d'oeuvres, to the taco bar, to the churro cupcakes were fantastic. They're organized, professional and everything that you want in a caterer - that you can trust for your big day!

Food was in our top two most important things to us, as my husband and I are both foodies who appreciate quality ingredients and farm-to-table sourcing. Not only does Root Cellar pride themselves on this type of cooking, but they place their heart and soul into their business, and it 100% shows in every step of the process when working with them.
We knew immediately upon meeting them and tasting their food that they had to cater our wedding, and we feel so lucky to have built a relationship with Jamie and Marie from that day on. Their attention to detail, their warmth and love for their clients, and their pride yet humbleness in their work makes them stand out in the sea of caterers in the marketplace.
The food: everything was beyond outstanding! Our family style meal was plentiful, SO delicious and presented so beautifully. It was also scaled to perfection; it tasted just as great as our tasting (if not better,) when served to our 130 guests. It was indeed a memorable meal, as countless guests raved about the food that night, and weeks after. The punchline? This is NOT "wedding food"! This is one of the highest quality meals we've had in the San Diego area.
Marie was also effortless to work with. She dotted our i's and crossed our t's when it came to event organization, rentals and working closely with our other vendors. She was a crucial asset to the team and made recommendations and improvements to areas of planning that were even outside of the catering world.
The best part is.. my husband and I got to clean our plates at the wedding!!!

I highly recommend Root Cellar Catering. For our wedding last year, our biggest priority was good food (within a reasonable budget). After contacting a few other caterers that a) would not get back to me, b) offered menus that were not what we wanted, or c) would not let us taste the food we wanted to serve at the wedding, we finally found Root Cellar Catering. Marie was fantastic and easy to work with, she coordinated the table and chair rentals for us (including set-up), and would have helped set up table décor herself if we had not decided to hire a day-of coordinator also. She got us in touch with a great bakery (Elizabethan Desserts) for the cake and dessert, and was fine with us providing our own alcoholic beverages (they set up a bar complete with bartenders). Best of all, their food was amazing and they worked with us to get the menu we wanted. They also ensured that we (bride and groom) were able to eat food the day of the wedding (we only missed out on 1 of 10 menu items). Did I mention the food was great? I recommend them to anyone looking for a caterer.

I found Root Cellar Catering at a wedding show at The San Diego Museum of Art and once I'd tasted their food I knew I needed to have them cater my wedding. I worked mainly with Marie but her and her husband are partners in the business. They were professional and extremely helpful. Everything went smoothly and all my guests raved about the food. The duo customized a menu.taking inspiration from one of my favorite books "Like Water For Chocolate" with the scene stealers being a chipotle mole brisket and chicken with rose petal cream sauce (complete with edible blossoms!). The guests raved about the food and I appreciated all the wonderful service. I was even given a Tiffany necklace as a wedding gift after, as if they hadn't done enough already?! Overall, it was amazing! Thanks again for all the hard work! All the details really made a difference. I would recommend them and am looking forward to working with them again.

Marie and Chef Jamie were just a DREAM to work with. The New Children's Museum had recommended them to me, based on my personality and I think they made a great match! Marie won me over via phone call as we bonded over our love of Red Dragon cheese and Spanish flavors. She was relaxed, collaborative and flexible. I had a totally unrealistic idea of budget and menu at first, and she talked me through it and helped us come up with a dream menu at a GREAT price. Our tasting was an absolute dream, too! Marie and Jamie welcomed us with Ballast Point beers, and just sat with us as we tasted everything and discussed what we loved. Months later, when my mother got more involved, Marie was so patient and flexible as adjustments needed to be made and additions thrown in. Cut to the actual wedding, and our guests went a little rogue, and had 32 special requests!! We only found out about this after the fact, but Marie and team totally rolled with it and happily made adjustments for our wiley guests.

Seriously, we lived the dream thanks to Marie and Jamie at Root Cellar. Simply the best.

I was happy with the overall service of this company and did find them flexible. The catering manager, sales person, Jessica, was pleasant and did a good job creating a menu that fit our needs. The owners are a mom and pop team which I love to support and must say Maria is a class act. Unfortunately the food was not the same on the day of the wedding that it was at the tasting. We had chosen a gorgeous white fish with maple bourban slaw and scallion rice and a flank steak with chimichurri sauce after the tasting. I don't expect the food to be as incredible as at a tasting ( a lot harder to make food for 80 people then 2) however the fish at the wedding was so bland and the rice was just plain white rice. There was barely any chimichurri sauce on the steak and the serving was so tiny. Food was our number one priority and it was the only disappointment. I still feel this is a good company which is why they deserve 4 stars but there is def room for improvement.
