Stop reading this and hire Riley already
TLDR: Hiring Riley was one of the single best decisions my husband and I made for our wedding. We cannot recommend her enough.
We LOVE Riley. No, I don’t think you get it — WE LOVEEEEEE RILEY. It’s been 2.5 months since we got married, and I don’t think there’s been a single week since our engagement shoot with her that we haven’t talked about how glad we are that we hired her to take our engagement and wedding pictures. As you can see by all of the other raving reviews, you should’ve emailed Riley by now to start the process of booking her. I mean honestly, what are you still doing reading this? GO EMAIL HER. BOOK HER. YOU WON’T REGRET IT!
We hired Riley to shoot an engagement session, our rehearsal dinner, and welcome reception, as well as all day of our wedding (plus a second shooter for day of). Obviously, I think you should hire her for your wedding, but I also want to encourage you to book her for more than just your “big day” — our engagement shoot gave us the time to really connect with Riley, have fun together, and honestly do something special as a couple in the midst of the stress of moving and wedding planning. I know planning a wedding can be expensive, trust me, but having Riley at our rehearsal dinner and welcome reception was a BLAST. It not only helped our guests get comfortable with having a photographer around, but it ensured that we were able to get more pictures with our favorite people, without having to run around during the reception to make sure we grabbed everyone we wanted a picture with. SPEND THE MONEY - it’s worth it.
You’ve already made it this far, so you know where we stand on hiring Riley (do it!) but instead of just writing about how much we love her, here are some concrete examples of why Riley is incredible at her job.
1. Adventure sessions — I’m going to be honest. I was not thrilled by the idea of engagement pictures in our hometown, in a random field, or some generic location like you see in most engagement shoots. So in comes Riley and her adventure sessions - we literally went to Vegas with her! We had a trip planned to Las Vegas and thought wouldn’t it be SO FREAKING COOL to get our engagement pictures done while we’re there. Guess who made that possible? Riley. Riley helped us decide where to shoot -- a combination of me telling Riley my dream location, and her adding her expertise to the mix. Not only did we get some of my favorite pictures of me and my husband of all time during our engagement shoot, but it was an incredible opportunity to spend time with Riley before the wedding. We built a rapport that carried through wedding planning and into the big day. So if you can, dare to do something different and go on an adventure with Riley!
2. Responsiveness — During wedding planning, the last thing you want is for your vendors to go AWOL. You don’t have to worry about that with Riley. She was always incredibly accessible via email - and oftentimes reached out with resources and recommendations that I didn’t even know to think about. When I had questions about the smallest of details, like ring box colors, vow books, etc. and felt like maybe it was too small of thing to ask about or that I was being *that bride* Riley always made me feel like I was the center of her attention (even though I knew she was also working with other couples at the same time). She was quick to give the best advice, and was always a calming presence during what can otherwise be a horrifically stressful time for many folks.
3. Willingness to try new things — In order to secure our venue, a museum, we had to commit to having our ceremony after it closed to the public, which meant after sunset. But most wedding pictures only show the big, bright, or glowy golden hour shoots. When I reached out to another photographer and told her about the ceremony being at night she literally scoffed. NOT RILEY. She showed us what night ceremony photos would look like, how they might look and feel different from day time shots, and helped us craft our day of schedule so that we could get all the shots we wanted in a variety of lights. And she made us feel cool for choosing something different. You can count on Riley to use her expertise to get you the best album, and celebrate any choice you make.
4. Experience in front of the camera — I’m sure you’re searching for your wedding photographer and thinking “but I don’t know how to pose”. Great - neither did we! But Riley made us feel like models. She provided helpful tips, and gave clear direction, but she was never pushy, always fun, and encouraged us to be natural the entire time. And it didn’t just apply to me and my husband — everyone in our wedding party and even our guests commented on how natural they felt around Riley and how much they enjoyed her presence and her guidance when taking pictures.
5. Values alignment — let’s get down to business here. We were spending a whole bunch of money on this wedding and I sure as heck didn’t want to spend a dime on a vendor who thinks that queer people are anything less than perfection, that thinks laws are meant for restricting people, or any other nonsense. So I was thrilled when I found Riley who is loud and proud about where she stands so I didn’t have to wonder. (To be clear, I still asked and she aced that test). It made me, my husband, other vendors, and our guests so relieved to be able to count on having another member on the team who we knew would be affirming, accepting, and loving throughout the whole process.
6. Quality of her work — Riley quickly turned around hundreds of pictures from all of our shoots. They are gorgeous. They are stunning. I cannot stop staring at them and will forever be grateful to Riley for capturing them.
So if I haven’t been clear enough, 10/10, A++, five stars, all of it. What are you doing reading this still? GO HIRE RILEY ALREADY.
