During our 3-month engagement period, my then-fiancé-now-husband and I scrolled through numerous portfolios. Wedding industry is a world of its own, and in the realm of photography, certain formulaic themes start to emerge as you scroll through the images. We wanted to find a professional photographer who can tastefully go off the road a bit. We came across Merri’s work with musicians, and were struck by the edgy beauty and artistry. (I’m a classically trained musician, and her artist portraits are what initially caught my attention.) While we weren’t quite sure how that would translate in the highly prescriptive and vanilla world of wedding, our engagement photoshoot with Merri quelled any uncertainty we had. She catches emotions, light, and action beautifully. The subjects’ poses may leave much to be desired, but her work somehow yields natural and intimate images – whether taken in portraiture or photojournalistic style. On our wedding day, both Merri and Mark, her second photographer, were joy to work/be with. After the celebratory dust settles, images are what remain. That, and love and bills. We are very much looking forward to seeing her work.

Merri was more than prompt--she arrived early and was flexible when plans didn't go as I thought they would (had to start off in our hotel instead of my venue due to another event ending later than scheduled).

Merri's been photographing me for more than 15 years so it was a dream come true when she agreed to come to England to shoot our wedding. Merri captured the narrative arc of the wedding weekend - from the rehearsal through the reception. Her appreciation of the northern light, the happiness in the room - she captured the stuff that was between the lines. Everyone who sees our photos comments that they are some of the best wedding photos they have ever seen.

Merri is great to work with! Not only is she professional and takes beautiful wedding shots, but she also goes beyond the call of duty. Merri Cyr bills herself as a wedding photographer with photojournalistic and artistic sensibilities. But she let us down on all counts. As a wedding photographer, she neglected to provide basic wedding shots, including portraits of the bride (and of the bride and groom) with her veil and bouquet, and a shot of the full wedding party. As a photojournalist, she failed to provide "day of" outdoor shots of our waterfront venue to “set the scene,” and missed key moments during both the ceremony and reception. And instead of artistry, we got underwhelming, often poorly composed shots that gave short shrift to the rustic nature of the venue and its waterfront setting and to reception details. Family group shots were taken in front of a plain white wall, despite the availability of many more interesting backgrounds, while many photos of the bride and groom were marred with catering personnel in the background setting up for the party.

When we expressed our disappointment, Cyr defensively blamed everyone else: the videographer she had recommended, for shooing her assistant away; the rabbi, for prohibiting her movement during the ceremony, and us—the parents of the bride—for not providing her a requested shot list. But she never followed-up in the days before the wedding, or even early on the wedding day, that she needed a list. And even if we had given her a list, we wouldn’t have thought it necessary to specify basic Wedding 101 shots.

We found Cyr's whole approach to our job to be casual and apathetic. In contrast to all our other vendors, who, months after contracts were signed, proactively stayed on top of our upcoming job, we had to contact her to remind her of the upcoming wedding and to discuss preparations. Sadly, we paid a lot of money expecting an experienced wedding photographer who would capture this day with an exciting photojournalistic and artistic edge. Instead, we got predominantly pedestrian photography and missed photographic memories.
