What does “Koumpares” mean?
- In Greece, a koumpara (female) or koumparos (male) [kumpára / koompáros]:
stands by the couple during their wedding ceremony, exchanging the crowns (stefana) – like a maid of honor, best man, or witness. - acts as a godparent at a child’s baptism.
In Greece, koumpares are not just “friends.” They are the special people who stand next to you on your wedding day or at your child’s baptism.
