Kahai Kitchen was founded in Kalihi during the summer of 2006 by owners Nao Iwata and Chef David Yamamoto. Since then, Kahai Kitchen has become known for its gourmet food, elevated catering operation & services, gourmet plate lunches served with Aloha and has developed a loyal following.
Kahai originally started as a catering company; however, based on an overwhelming amount of requests, we launched the plate lunch aspect of our business; we have never looked back since. We truly appreciate our loyal following, clientele which is comprised of such a diverse range of segments.

Best caterer! Highly recommend!
Kahai Street Kitchen was one of our favorite vendors. Not only was their food the best out of all the caterers we tried, Chef Nao was so great to work with. Chef Nao is experienced with catering for weddings, and it was very helpful to work with someone so knowledgeable! Chef Nao is very creative and worked with us to put together the perfect menu for us! My husband and I look forward to working with Chef Nao and Kahai Street Kitchen in the future, as well. We highly recommend Kahai Street Kitchen for any catering needs.

KSK came highly recommended by our wedding planner, so of course we went with them. A tasting was set up for the food choices that we picked up from the catering menu. WARNING: go with an empty stomach & pace yourselves because it is definitely not a tasting, but an eatery for two. The food was soooo delicious but so plentiful (for samples), we had bags for leftovers.
Nao is the owner, & he is one of the sweetest people you will ever meet. He serviced us during our tasting, he was kind, & generous. The samples were so professionally decorated, it really gave me a sense of excitement knowing how the food will be presented at our wedding. It had the elegance of a high end restaurant with a price affordable for our budget.
The food we ordered was cooked on site, so the food was as fresh & tasty as it can get! The staff was amazing. They walked around serving appetizers & ensured the tables were kept clean. At the end of the night we had pans of take home food, which we greatly appreciated.
Just the overall presentation & professionalism of Nao, his team, & the food made our wedding extravagant. It's rare to find a business that's affordable yet depicts class & pride in their food & service. We received A LOT of compliments on the food from our fam & friends. Our wedding was the best in every aspect of that night. My wife asked me what I wanted to eat on the plane ride home..."Please tell me you packed some of the leftovers from the wedding!"
Chef Nao is based out of the restaurant storefront of Kahai Street Kitchen (KSK) where you can try many of his famous dishes such as his Kalbi Braised Short Ribs. As for his catering, he set up a private tasting out of KSK, where he prepared several of his signature items as well as several items that my wife selected. Due to a hurricane warning, we had to move our wedding up 24 hours and Nao seamlessly delivered everything we asked for a full day in advance. Everything we asked for from the bacon-wrapped scallops to the garlic mushroom risotto was cooked to perfection. Our guests left our wedding raving "Best wedding food we've ever had." I would recommend him for anyone who wants fine dining cuisine with a local flare and a chance to customize your menu.

I can't even begin to explain how amazing Chef Nao's food is. We were absolutely blown away at our tasting.
After meeting Chef Nao, we could easily tell that he takes great pride in what he does, and it definitely shows in the dishes that he makes.
We challenged him to serve our dinner family style which he was hesitant about (for good reason since we were having an outdoor wedding), but he executed everything flawlessly since he knew how important it was for us to do a family style dinner.
All our guests were raving about how great the food was, which is so wonderful to hear since weddings aren't known for having the best food but Chef Nao has definitely set the bar high for future weddings.
We don't live in Hawaii, but I'm so happy we were fortunate to do a tasting with Chef Nao and I would recommend doing a tasting if you can. Not because it is necessary (since anything Chef Nao makes is going to be amazing), but
because having the opportunity to enjoy his food more than once is a very special treat.
Thank you Chef Nao and team for being so wonderful and talented! You really made our wedding day perfect. We hope to visit you again!

"Best wedding food ever." - The best compliment you can give a bride.
It's been almost a month since our wedding and we are still getting people talking about the food at our reception. We booked Chef Nao and his team upon recommendation of our wedding planner and it was the best decision ever. Even from the tasting event, we could tell Chef Nao takes cooking seriously. He brought out big portions of most his dishes, plate after plate, the hardest part was narrowing done what we wanted to serve to our guests.
We ended up ordering:
Island Ginger Chicken Pesto
Poke Spring Rolls
Okinawan Sweet Potato and Kalua Pig Mini Cakes
Mini Seafood Cakes
Pipikaula and Watercress Salad
Crispy Kataifi-Wrapped Shrimp
Furikake-Crusted Salmon
Kalbi Braised Boneless Short Ribs
Hong Kong Stuffed Chicken
The stars were definitely the okinawan sweet potato/kalua pig mini cakes, seafood cakes, crispy shrimp, short ribs, and stuffed chicken. The crispy/fried items were fried on the spot and remained crisp which was feat for an event that long and of that size. The serving team were all so professional and friendly as well. The short ribs and the chicken, tender, flavorful, I'm still dreaming about eating it again. All this for a very reasonable price per head, the presentation, quality, and flavor all came off much more expensive than it was.

Our wedding planner, Carrie, recommended Nao, the chef and the owner of Kahai Street Kitchen. We had a small outdoor wedding in November in a private estate in Oahu. We like Nao very very much and am glad that he is our caterer. He has high standard on his food - quality, taste and presentation.
1. Seven months before our wedding We first received a 5 page menu options for appetizer, entrees and sides. We then asked some clarifications questions via email and a couple of phone calls with Nao. He gave us good recommendations. He offered us a free tasting when we arrived.
2. One week before the wedding, we flew in and went for a tasting at 1030a. I thought it's just a couple of small bites. But NO, Nao prepared two full size appetizer plates (there are 4 options that we selected), a entree size Cesar salad and entrees for both me and my husband. We were so full that we had to take out. He then offered us water and hawaiian beverage! While we were eating, Nao explained to us how he would prepare it/present it on plates, ask for our feedback, and give us alternatives if he couldn't find the same ingredients (the baby romaine lettuce) on the day of (oh, our wedding day was the day after the Thanksgiving and hence he was worried he was not able to get what he wanted from the market). At that time, we gave Nao our complete trust. We didn't worry one bit. He is a perfectionist chef!
3. Nao and his team arrived the venue early.The servers are smiley and professional. The food was so delicious and plentiful that everyone said they didnt even have room for dessert! Nao even came by to serve me and my husband personally and apologized that he had to use toasted garlic bread, instead of the original crisp. It is totally not needed as the toasted garlic bread is as good as the crisp! I was so touched and I really respect his demand to his work and professionalism.
If you go for tasting, don't judge by the decor. Trust your stomach. Very good value!
