No Wedding Cake?

Miranda, on December 28, 2011 at 10:31 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23

Hello Ladies.

Hoping some of you can help me out here: I'm not sure I want to have a wedding cake. I don't really like cake. No I'm not crazy, haha, most are just too sweet for me. So, I was wondering if it would be weird to do cupcakes or mini cheesecakes? Also, any other suggestions for appropriate cake substitutes?

Thanks in advance!

I think that will be fine since you do not like cake......I think if you can set up both of them ....that will be cute with like cupcakes surrounding the cheesecake...but not having a cake seems to be fine with me

I'm doing cupcakes, I've seen some other people suggest doing pies or a dessert bar instead as well. I do think there are a lot of people getting away from the traditional tiered wedding cake. You should enjoy what you are getting. If you still want to do the tradition of 'cutting the cake' you can just get a small round cake or use a pie or even cheesecake too.

Cupcakes are totally in now and I'm doing a cupcake cake lol... Mostly because our event is not very formal and I won't have anyone there to be cutting the cake for everyone. I'll also save on desert spoons and plate rentals Smiley smile

cupcakes are easiest, but a cupcake cake also has a top tier for FH and I to cut for the pics Smiley smile And freeze! lol... Some cupcake cakes can be very elegant too!

Another idea we had had which is relatively inexpensive too is CAKEPOPS. You can put them on the tables too!

I think that would be fine as well. As long as you do the cake cutting, which is what your guests will be expecting, I don't think they will care what kind of cake it is. Even at home we have a disagreement about what kind of frosting is best. Smiley smile

Thanks for the advice so far, ladies! I was worried the cake is a tradition I shouldn't mess with (and I totally forgot about the cake cutting), but I LOVE the cupcake cake idea! We will only have 50 guests, so it would be easy to make one. I will certainly have to run it by my baker (a.k.a. one of my good friends) Smiley smile.

I really wanted to explore all my options since my FH is going to have a yummy chocolate cake and I LOVE chocolate anything so I would be totally jealous of his cake. There's another question, is it totally weird to do a chocolate wedding cake? I know it wouldn't be as pretty as a white one, but it sure would taste good! MMMmmm, haha.

We aren't having a cake either. Instead, we're having a big dessert display with a bunch of nibbles to choose from.

We arent have a wedding cake I dont eat cake and my FH is diabetic, PLUS we are having a huge sweets table so dont see a need for it. If we do decide last minutes that we want one my FH cousin is a cake maker so we will just have her make us a small one for pictures.

As they say, it's your party. Smiley smile cupcakes are a trend so it shouldn't be a big issue. there are very pretty wedding cupcake set-ups such as what you can find in Google:

We did a small cutting cake and then cupcakes all around. It was fun because we could have all of the flavors that we wanted and it cut down on the mess and cutting time!

I think Mini-cheesecakes would be really yummy and unique! Who doesn't like cheesecake!

I wanted to order mini-pies from a local shop, but FH is dead-set on a wedding cake. I think for cost purposes we're going to get cupcakes, and a small 1 or 2 tier cake for cutting.

As mentioned, cupcakes are VERY popular now. We actually did mini cupcakes in several flavors. They were a huge hit, especially with the kids. We also had a small cake for the topper and for cutting, but most of it ended up in the trash LOL.

Ladies, thanks for the ideas! I found this one online and it fits perfectly with my "Sangria" (David's Bridal) color scheme! However, that rice crispy cake in that other feed that Caitlin posted looks YUMMY! I LOVE rice crispies!

My FH and I are not big cake people either. Our wedding is in august and I love ice cream. We found a company that rents out ice cream trucks, like the ones that drive through neighborhood during the summer. So we are having the ice cream man come to our wedding instead. We will have a very small cake to cut but that's it. You only pay for what people order so you ndont have a bunch of uneaten cake left over.

I personally am not a fan of the cupcake idea. But I think that is because I just love the look of the wedding cake. Anyhow, I really love the Sangria color one you found Miranda.

Me and my FH are actually going to have lego block shaped cupcakes. It's gonna be funny. But do whatever you want. I don't like Cake frosting (I know crazy) so I may not have them frosted not sure yet.

We are having cupcakes too. My oldest daughter is a pastrie chef soooo huge savings there! My FH is not a sweets person so we will only have a very small top cake for the "cutting" pic only. I like the idea of cheesecake instead too. Its your wedding. I say do whatever you like.

We don't like cake either, so i'm in the same boat. as far as the whole cupcake trend...personally not a fan (and FH isn't either). we are having cheesecake topped with fresh strawberries instead. shortcake was an option, too, but the cheesecake we tasted from local bakery was too yummy to pass up Smiley smile mini pies are a great choice, too. they can even be packaged in mini mason jars
