DIY Birdcage Veil, not done but *Update new pics in comments.*

HalloweenBride, on August 28, 2012 at 3:00 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 22

So, I bought the supplies to make my own because most of them have feathers on them, which I hate! So here is the base. I wanted to add a flower but I couldn't find any black ones at Michaels.

Here is how i was hoping to get it to lay, and then a few pictures of it on me. It's a bit poofier than I had wanted but I am trying to remedy that. In the pictures it looks really far back on my head but it wasn't.

I might have to re-do it, I want to know how they got it so flat, maybe I used too much fabric....

*Bump* I would like more opinions on if it is too poofy or not!

Cute, but maybe a little too poofy. I admire your ability to handle all of these DIY projects! Wish I was as creative!

I love it. I do think its a little poofy. Can you just push it down a little ?

I think when you add more stuff to the top of it, it may lay flatter. But yours does look like it has way more fabric than your inspiration pic does.

I also think too much fabric most fascinators are fabric in the front and less in the back the back area is where you could maybe hide in a hair clip that you sew in to help gather the material and once you put on the flowers that should help too. remember its to lay slightly over the front of face the back doesn't need to be covered as much. also i would put your hair in the style you plan to wear it because you may be able to put small clips on the side as well

I also think it's just a bit too poofy, but still think it looks awesome. This is one of those DIY's I'd never be able to do.. Smiley smile

Oh Ariel, I bought the net cut it to a length according to a tutorial, cut the corners off the top, and weaved thread in and out of the little diamonds and hand stitched it onto the little cap I bought. You can't see the stitches at all and they are totally messy! Lol.

I will cut the length and try again when FH isn't home!

I think it's awesome you would take the project on. Good job! Is it poofy? It's poofier than your inspiration, but I think when you put the flower on it, it will flatten more, but then again, I don't sew, so I could be dead wrong.

I argee with Carole, maybe when you put the flower on, depending where the petals lay, it should make it sit down on your head alittle more. I think it's beautiful!!

Adorable! If you do want it to be less poofy try cutting the fabric so that it's the longest right by your face, have it slowly get shorter as you circle to the back, does that make sense?

What length did you cut the material? I made a birdcage veil as well, I never got it to lay exactly like the photos. This is the tutorial I used: http://www.weddingchicks.com/2010/11/09/make-your-own-birdcage-veil/

It calls for 12 inches, I think I made it slightly longer (and therefore poofier) because it felt weird on my face when it was tighter and flatter.

I think it's the hat thing I got. I need to use combs or clips. I tried again, cut it shorter and cut less material and STILL can't get how I like. So I may just suck it up and buy it made for me if I can find one unadorned in feathers, because I had a hard time looking for black flowers anyway.

Okay, I looked to buy and decided they were all too expensive (and what's with all the feathers????) and re-did my approach. This is a bandeau style so it will bobby pin on both sides, and I can pin the top down if I want, but I kinda like it as is now!

FYI, it's 15 inches long and 6 wide. A seller on ebay had it 15 long and 9 wide but I had already cut it when trying to make the other style less poofy and seriously, it's still plenty wide enough and can sit where I want it!

OR, alternatively, you can buy a flower that you like the look of and use fabric paint to paint it black.
