Cake prices

Aidan (Mrs. Cowgell!), on January 18, 2012 at 10:14 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

My mom was in town for a few days, so we decided to visit bakeries and get info on wedding cakes so that FH and I could figure out where we wanted to book tastings. By the end of the day, I was fairly well convinced that either I'm not as aware of average prices as I thought or my mother is totally oblivious to what anything costs for a wedding these days. The highest quote I've been given was $4.19/slice starting price, $0.75 extra/slice for fondant. The lowest was $2.85/slice starting, $8/tier to change the flavor from white (which really doesn't change the per slice price too drastically). Unfortunately, someone also told her that they *think* Kroger used to do cakes starting at $1.00/slice and she seems a bit stuck on that. I'm planning to talk directly to my dad, since he often has a better sense of money than my mom, but I'm still worried that her expectations are unrealistic.

    I don't know if you have a question, but if you're interested in my cake prices:

    Groom's cake is $65 - replica of my fiance's red Mustang, German Chocolate (serves 20-30)

    Three-tier buttercream wedding cake with average design (not plain, but not complicated), some fondant "decorations" - $250-$350 depending on final design...serves 100-150

    Cupcakes with frosting and two fondant hearts on top - 100 cupcakes total for $200

    So I guess per serving it's about $2.34?

    This was the cheaper of two bakeries I went to. The more expensive one was closer to your high price and her cake was out of this world good! She also literally could have made me a plain white cake with NOTHING on it for my budget...so I said no thanks. The lady I ended up choosing had delicious cake and is being very generous with her design while still fitting into my budget. She also is making the groom's cake that I really wanted for an excellent price. The first lady's min for groom's cakes was $200!

    I guess I am just wanting to know what other people are paying for their cakes. We are wanting a fairly simple design, and each tier a different flavor. With the pricing at the last place, that would be fairly simple. I'm not a fan of white cake at all, neither of us are, so the base price of any bakery (most seem to base it on white cake) wont be an option for us. With the lowest quote, a 10" tier (serves appx. 35) in a different flavor would be about 3.07/slice, without any filling. Now, I don't think I've ever had cake from this bakery, but they are a Louisville institution (been around 119 years!) and everything else I've ever had from them has been amazing. I'm not dead set on them, but to me their prices seem reasonable.

    I am getting our cake from a local baker and our total cost for our cake with delivery is approximately $500. We are having four tier cake with extra two 10 inch rounds to feed approximately 220 guests. We aren't doing any fondant but she wouldn't charge us if we were so that was good.

    So are you wanting a base color that isn't white? Just so you know, that's going to cause the price to increase significantly because they have to change the frosting. I don't like the all white cakes either (white base with white design), but you can get a white base with colored design.

    I would definitely go and try the cake from each place you are considering...not only is it important, but it's been one of my favorite wedding things Smiley smile

    I (along with my mom and future MIL) am doing the cupcakes ourselves. I am ordering the 8 inch cake from my favorite local bakery (about $10) for us to cut into.

    This same bakery originally quoted me $15/dz for the cupcakes (which is why we are doing them ourselves since we will have 300 cupcakes) and $3.40/slice for the cake (which would have been a simple design, buttercream, and fillings of our choice for each tier) (plus a $120 delivery fee & setup fee).

    So - I decided to DIY it with cupcakes and all, to save us quite a bit of money. These prices were the cheapest I found in our area too. The highest price was $4.80/slice for this super awesome bavarian cheesecake that if I could afford it, I would definitely order, LOL!! But I can't see spending that much on cake when our total budget is only 5K.

    @Brandi

    I've had Walmart cakes, and been rather unimpressed with them.

    @CrystalS

    That much I know. I figure in Louisville, Ky prices will be moderate to high, depending on what type of place I'm looking at. I've already said no way to a couple of specialty places due to their prices.

    Cakes in Chicago start around $4/slice for the basics, at least what I've found. We're doing a variety of smaller cakes that each feed ten people, which cost around $28.00 per cake, instead of the giant wedding cake.

    However- keep in mind if you have a variety of smaller items instead of one large cake, you need to rent or purchase stands for them, which can make the cost almost the same.

    Some bakeries charge much less for a styrofoam cake with a real top tier that you and H cut, with a sheet cake in the back that gets served to guests. Maybe ask about that?

    When I say white cake, I'm referring to the cake itself, not the icing color. You know, that flavorless stuff that kids birthday cakes used to be made out of all the time. White icing I am totally fine with, with some color in the design.

    @Jess and Chris

    If only we had Publix around here. We are too far north, it's all Kroger around here.

    @Laura M

    While I love the DIY cake ideas I've seen on here, cupcakes just aren't for us. That, and I think my mother would have a fit, lol.

    At the two bakeries I went to, they had "regular flavors" and "premium flavors." I believe what you are saying is that you don't want vanilla, which I don't blame you...check out this discussion about cake flavors...it will get your mouth watering and might give you some ideas!

    The sheet cake that @Kris mentioned is a great option for brides with lower budgets. You still get that beautiful centerpiece cake you've always dreamed of, and then the guests get served the EXACT SAME cake from the back (just without all of the pretty decorations)! All the guests care about is what it tastes like, so that's a great option to look into. Sheet cakes are really cheap because basically you just have to pay for the ingredients, since no design work needs to be done.

    @Kris

    I've thought about the fake cake idea. I'm actually thinking of making my own couple of fake tiers to go under the real ones, since we only need 3 tiers for 150 guests and I wouldn't mind having a larger cake. Sadly, from what I've seen, none of the places I've talked to do the full fake cake with sheet cakes in the back thing.

    @Katie Bug

    Yes, vanilla is what I was talking about. Thank you, I couldn't think of the actual flavor and on the info sheet it's just referred to as white. We already have a good idea of what we want, and none of them are premium flavors. One tier chocolate, one tier red velvet and one tier either almond (have to taste it first) or spice (might end up using that for the grooms cake).

    And it's not so much that we have a low budget (though I do love getting a great deal), it's more that my mother looked about to pass out each time the price was mentioned somewhere. That, and she doesn't understand why the cakes are priced by the slice and I'm having a hard time explaining that one to her.
