Can you print on metallic-type envelopes??

Former MDLS now Mrs. K, on April 8, 2010 at 5:13 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

Does anyone know if you can print on metallic envelopes on either a laser printer or inkjet? I thought I read somewhere that someone said the metallic material will melt with a home printer??? I don't know if that is true or not but if so I don't want to fry my printers.

I tried it on the envelopes for my STD's and it did not work. I used clear labels.

I was looking into getting Matallic program covers but than I saw that you need a laser printer if you want to print on them.

I have a laser and inkjet. Well I did think about using Martha Stewarts idea of wrap around labels and I would use the clear if I don't try the laser ,thanks. See picture below if you want to use something like this for your envelopes.

And you can use this link to get the template she provides for these labels

Yeah Analy, I loved them. They are a little different but still cute. I did read somewhere that their post office was giving them a hard time about these labels but I'm sure Martha Stewart and her crew did their homework and researched this before they posted this on their website, but I guess I'll double check with the post office before printing all of them and going to mail them!!

The problem with the wraparound labels is the return address being printed on the back. I read one forum where a bride said all of her invitations were delivered to her address. I think the solution is to print the return address sideways. So if you have a text box, just rotate it to the left 90 degrees.

Usually metallic doesn't work well with home printers because the ink doesn't dry. Clear labels work really well though.

I have printed on heavy metallic cardstock using a laser printer (HP).

Just a heads up on this--the postal clerk I spoke to about metallic envelopes said they often have problems canceling them; I'm not sure if you'd then have to pay extra for hand-canceling with them or not. He did tell me that if I was using metallic envelopes, I should use large enough address labels that weren't metallic that the cancellation could be stamped onto the labels.

I have had customers use the metallic envelopes as the inner and enclose inside a matching flat envelope, since this outer enclosure typically gets messed up in the mail anyway.

That's what we did, since our invites had metallic gold envelopes; I just put them inside a larger white envelope.

I didn't realize at the time that you're not supposed to seal the inner envelope, but my mother made sure to tell me when she got hers. *eyeroll*
