About
Holly McCombs, born in New York, has resided on the East Coast all her life.  Her father was a professional photographer and she spent many hours in the darkroom while growing up.  In 2000, she decided to expand her knowledge and expertise of photography and began taking college-level photography courses.  Although she loves the darkroom work, in this age of digital media, she shoots digitally and does the darkroom work on the computer with Photoshop.  Holly uses Canon camera equipment.

The focus of Hollyhocks Photography LLC is wedding photography.  The focus is a mix of traditional photography and wedding photojournalism.  She captures all the expected moments of this special event, but also seeks the spontaneous, candid and real moments that tell an emotional story.  Holly is a great capturer of detail shots, which tend to have the look of fine art.    She doesn't seek "cheese" smiles, but interacts with the client to bring out their true personality, which she then captures. This results in beautiful photographs that her clients love.

The neat thing about Holly is that you don't know she is there. She quietly takes photos and doesn't get in the way. I have worked with photographers that are obnoxious and "in your face." Not Holly; she blends in with the surroundings and the next thing you know, you have magnificent photos of your most special day! She is a joy to work with and she will make sure your wedding pictures are wonderful!

Frequently Asked Questions for Photography
Do you offer special techniques such as hand-coloring or toning?
I offer a combination of color and black and white photography. I include basic retouching - which includes color correction, facial blemish removal, facial retouching in all formal shots and distracting background element removal (i.e. a switchplate in the background of a formal shot will be removed.) on full service contracts. Some contracts include color correction only.

Do you have experience shooting in various lighting situations?
With wedding photography, I shoot in all conditions.

Is your media preference film or digital?
I shoot exclusively digitally in the RAW format. RAW preserves all the information my camera receives so I have full color options for editing. You will receive your negatives in the JPEG format for convenient printing.

How many photographers do you work with?
I generally work alone. If a second photographer is requested, I have associates I can check availability with and there would be a signficant fee increase.

Do you guarantee your presence at the actual event?
Yes. If I cannot be there, you receive a complete refund and I will help you find a replacement.

Do you sometimes book yourself for more than one event in a day? Weekend?
Never. I do not overbook myself because I want to get you your photographs as quickly as possible and be bright and fresh on your wedding day.

What kind of equipment do you typically bring with you on the day-of?
2 cameras, 2 flashes, lots of memory cards and 4 - 6 lenses.

Do you bring back-up equipment to the event in case of malfunction?
Yes.

Do you charge hourly or full day?
Full day (8 hours) with additional hours at an hourly rate.

Are you available to shoot extra hours? If yes, how much do you charge for extra hours?
Yes, $250 per hour

What is your policy on taking breaks? If you require a meal break, do you require that the client provide your meal?
The meal is my only break.

Do you charge for travel?
Only if it is outside a reasonable travel area.

How soon after the event are the proofs ready for viewing?
The final prints are ready in 4 weeks or less.

In what format are the initial proofs offered?
There are no proofs, my clients receive all their images in final form.

How long can the client keep the proofs?
All prints are yours to keep forever.

Do you retain the copyright for the photos?
Yes, though you can reprint & enlarge as often as you'd like for personal use.

Do you reserve the right to publish the photos?
Yes, unless a specific request has been made (usually due to governmental security reasons).

Do you provide the digital files and/or negatives (or copies of the negatives) to the client?
Yes, in full resolution. You may print these files as much as you'd like for personal use only - meaning you can't sell the prints for profit.

Will images be available for viewing online?
No, but you may post them online because you have the negatives. This gives you the added advantage of choosing what to post and your friends and relatives can order their own prints at a reasonable fee.

What kind of albums do you offer?
I offer Zookbinder and GraphiStudio albums, both high quality books.

When will the client get the final album?
Approximately 1 month after your approval of the layout, depending on the return time from the binder. During peak months it can range up to 6 weeks.

Tips and Advice

If your dress is white, choose colorful flowers - they pop in photographs.

When planning your timeline - make sure you leave some time for bridal formals before the ceremony.

Choose a photographer you feel comfortable with.  You'll be spending the entire day with them and if they annoy you, it will show in your expression and you won't be happy with your images.

Photography is an investment - it is the one thing from your wedding you'll have in your hands to enjoy for the next 50 years.  Choose a photographer whose style and images you love.
