Would you lie....

Finally mrs.jkr, on June 27, 2014 at 10:35 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 28

To get a better price on something? The local market bakery (that makes the most delicious cakes I have eaten) charges double for wedding cakes when compared to their other specialty cakes. a six inch round for wedding is $45 where it is only $20 when not a wedding cake and so on.

Have you/would you tell a little white lie?

I am a cake decorator, thats my job all day every day, and the only difference is if you say birthday, we do the cake and it is 85% perfect, sometimes 90% (by perfect I mean entirely uniform, exactly spaced out, perfect borders, no bubbles, all flowers are EXACTLY the same size, same distance apart etc etc). A wedding cake that we know is a wedding cake we make sure is 100% perfect in all aspects, so its really up to you. Last time I told the truth about being a decorator I had my head bitten off by brides on WW, who said I didnt know what customer service was- im just being honest and transparent, I hope that helps you when you order

But yes I told someone to say its a bday cake last week, which changed the price from 180 to 100

I would! I would say it's an anniversary cake if it changes the price.

Nope-- Like Anisea says, vendors charge more for weddings b/c there is more at stake. Not just in terms of how much care they put into it, but also in terms of prioritizing your cake and ensuring it gets done on time. You know a baker is going to get a wedding cake done no matter what, but if they are really short staffed, etc, the birthday/regular occassion cakes will take the back burner.

Yep I would agree with wedding they do take more care lol but I think that's more knowing purple want it perfect. I honestly don't care if it's perfect, I just want it to taste sessions and look decent.

I may try to talk them into allowing me to have special occasion cakes since I'm not planning on having a big layered wedding cake. @Wendy that's the problems I've been having. I don't want to have a bad situation because of a white lie

I wouldn't for the very reason Anisea stated. Most vendors go the extra mile for a wedding cake because it is on display and EVERYONE is admiring it and taking pictures.

I would not because, just as others have said, the baker could sue you if they find out you lied about it. Saving $100 isn't worth it if you get sued.

That's crazy that because it's a birthday cake you wouldn't make sure the cake is 100% perfect.

You're also not going to do a tasting and have numerous conversations about a birthday cake.

The vendor can't sue you (at least they won't) just b/c you ordered a a birthday cake instead of a wedding cake. Why do they care? You as a customer buy a cake. What event you use it for is up to you. To answer the question, yes I would. If the cake looked nice enough and tastes awesome, that's good enough for me.

I would. It's not right that some bakers don't put 100% into all their orders, but I care more about taste than presentation.

I wouldn't. But that is just my personality. I will pay what a vendor requests, as long as I am comfortable with the price. If I am not, then I need to keep looking but I am not going to lie. I believe in karma.

I wouldn't. For the simple fact that 1 if they get lots of orders (and like Barbara said), short staffed your cake would end up on the back burner if it isn't listed as a wedding cake, and 2 its still lying. You could end up spending more money paying for the white lie then just the extra 100.

It depends. Our cake was not a priority for me so saving extra $$ was more important than perfection.

You don't have to lie. You can order a birthday cake for a wedding. They can't sue you for that. That's ridiculous. The contract is based on the type of cake you are ordering, not the occasion.

Anisea-- thanks for the insight-- I never thought about the extra care a good bakery would take with a wedding cake. And, that said, I would totally lie-- if my cake is 80% perfect, that is fine by me. Smiley sexy

@zoe haha, that's fine for me too. I'm wanting something cute and casual like the pic below. I don't need some really large fancy cake.
