Would you hire an inexperienced wedding videographer for free?

FutureMrsKC, on July 18, 2019 at 3:21 PM Posted in Planning 0 33

Kind of a poll for you all!

A friend of mine has a lot of video production experience (even a college degree in it, so the skill is there) but she has never done weddings before. She wants to get into the wedding industry, so she is thinking of offering a few free weddings first to help build her portfolio before she charges.

If you were/are a bride on a super tight budget would you say "eh nothing to lose" and hire her for free? Just a poll to see how real brides feel about that!

I'd love to have her as a videographer if that came up to me! So many people skimp on it but she's got professional skills for free? Good deal to me.

Awesome! So would I! Nothing invested, nothing to lose. At worst, you got a free video out of it, even if it doesn't blow you away. Thanks for responding! I figured this would be a great place to ask!

Thats how her and I see it, too! She really wants to build her portfolio so she has something to show for weddings. I know she is great at filming and editing but she just hasn't done weddings. Thank you for the feedback!

Probably yes. My only hesitation would be I would worry that someone inexperienced may get in the way of the photographer(s). I would say have her ask to speak with whoever the photographer is ahead of time to coordinate where she should stand and what she should/should not do to avoid getting in their shots. It would definitely ease my mind as the bride to know that she wouldn’t be in their way, and also would probably help your friend learn by working more directly with the professional photographers

Definitely a great point! Videography in many other realms is much similar to that of weddings. She has done a lot of big shoots before with multiple cameras and producers so its pretty typical to be working around other people! I'll definitely remind her of that point though as well! Thanks for the feedback!

If a videographer wasn't in your original budget, I'd say 100% YES! If its something that you really really cared about and had budgeted to do it I would probably respond with something along the lines of "I'd prefer if you attended strictly as a guest so you can enjoy the evening with us rather than work during it."

Oh she's not going to offer to her friends I don't think. I believe she planned to make a post about it on social media so she could get a feel!

If I wanted a videographer I wouldn't take a free one for fear of quality. That being said, if videographer was never on your "must have" list (isn't for me!) then I absolutely would hire her!

Absolutely. Or even a minimal fee of $200-$300 dollars for someone with no experience. We didn't have room for one in our budget and wish we had figured out a way to squeeze it in.

Yes!! As long as she fits the style I'm going for. Since she has her degree, that would take most of the worry away from me. Also, if she's just starting out she's going to be more eager to work with you with literally any requests you have!!

I don't think quality is a fear of hers going into it. She has worked professionally in video production for years, she just wants to get into the wedding side of things. I think my biggest hesitation wouldn't be quality, it would be just making sure she got everything!

Same! We waited until last minute and hired someone for 2 hours to film our ceremony for $600. Total rip-off. The video was ok, but didn't blow me away. My video was partially what got her thinking about giving it a try! The market is full of expensive videographers that deliver sub-par videos, its sad!

No problem! Just saying that would be my only possible hesitation... otherwise why would you turn down a free service? Sounds great! Good luck to her! Smiley smile
