Would you hire an inexperienced wedding videographer for free?

Kind of a poll for you all! A friend of mine has a lot of video production experience (even a college degree in it, so the skill is there) but she has never done weddings before. A friend of mine has a lot of video production experience (even a college degree in it, so the skill is there) but she has never done weddings before. She wants to get into the wedding industry, so she is thinking of offering a few free weddings first to help build her portfolio before she charges.

If you were/are a bride on a super tight budget would you say "eh nothing to lose" and hire her for free? Just a poll to see how real brides feel about that!

In a heartbeat! We’re actually doing something very similar...our videographer does a lot of corporate videos but is wanting to get into wedding videography. Because he’s a friend of a friend, we’re getting him at his hourly rate, with all editing thrown in there. While it’s not free, we’re saving quite a bit of money.

Yes aha I would because videography is expensive and if she has some kind of experience making videos I'd let her

I would, if she's got degree level skill for free!

And even if it did turn out terrible, I wouldn't be too disappointed as i didn't waste any money. So it's a no lose situation really

And long as I had a photographer there to capture the event too, and the videographer has done events, successfully, I don’t see why not to try it. Other wise you wouldn’t have any videographer right?

Please please PLEASE check their previous work. I seen plenty cheap work and the quality is 480p with a shakey camera. If you need a videographer be sure their work is good. If it’s not important then yes free is great.

I would absolutely allow them to do it! If they have any experience in video (which they do) than you should be in good hands

It depends. If the video sucks, will that be so horrible for you that it will affect the friendship? If so, I wouldn't use the friend (or at least, would have a professional videographer in addition to your friend, so you'll have something if your friend screws up).

We had a talented friend who did our video for free. And we loved what she did. But if the video had been really critical to us, I wouldn't have endangered the friendship by having her do it.

    Absolutely.
My videographer is also in film, and has never done weddings. I am paying her a small fee to cover costs, but it's still a HUGE discount.

We weren't going to have one, otherwise, but she gets the experience, I get a video, and all my industry friends meet another industry person.

    Triple win, can't go wrong.
