Why Fondant????

I agree with Greyash. Not a fondant fan..and we chose cupcakes instead. My FH is super traditional so we ended up have a small 2 tiers 4" & 6" cakes on top..still no fondant though.

I am doing normal icing. The only fondant on the cake will be the ribbon around the bottom of each layer, and the little pearls.

Here is a photo of my daughters cake. This was all buttercream, with a chocolate "flow". The calla lilies were made from white chocolate. Not one ounce of fondant.

Another note about fondant. The staff at the hotel, where my daughters wedding and reception were held, HATE cutting fondant cakes. They say that the fondant ends up falling off, many times, and looking horrid.

They were relieved when we told then that the cake would be buttercream. Whew!

@Kaara, thanks. It looked great and tasted fabulous too! LOL! Three different flavors. The bottom was pink champagne with strawberry filling; next layer was poppyseed with raspberry filling and the top was white with lemon filling.

On a bakers note...fondant is easy to work with to get any design ..flowers, people, or any other shape for that matter. They do have MANY different kinds of fondant..some taste good some taste like crap. As for me...I have made many cakes both ways...and I think they both turn out pretty..

Ugh! I like baking cake myself. Aaaand don't like fondant. Its chewy like lafy taffy. Buttercream is harder to decorate but a good decorator will get it close to perrfect all u need to do is smooth it with paper towel. I make Dominican cake and the icing is the best! Its like eating marshmellows

Its because it is sturdier (butter-cream can melt if it gets even a little too hot) and they can do more elaborate designs with it. Its also the "in thing". I bet that 20 years ago some brides where saying "Why do all cake makers use columns?" Now no-one uses them.

Most people use the fondant because it's easier to work with and you can do more with it. There is only so much you can do with icing. On my wedding cake we had butter cream icing as the base and the decorations were done using fondant.

Thank you all for your input. Kathy I'm loving the buttercream with chocolate flow. It looks great and it sounds like it tasted pretty good too.

@Keisha, it was tasty. Too tasty. LOL!

My daughter and son-in-law wanted the chocolate flow to be done with white chocolate, so they had a small cake made as a test. It didn't turn out well, as the blue showed through the white. The dark chocolate turned out great.

I am choosing fondant, they have come out with one that has a taste close to cotton candy.

Fondant is used for some of the fancier cakes because it is easier to work with and requires less precision. For the baker, it costs far less to use fondant, too, than buttercream. You also don't require the skill of a baker that works in buttercream. Our cake is very elaborate, all of the flowers will be hand made of sugar and the icing will be buttercream. Only one feature on the grooms cake will be cut out of foondant - a helmet....the rest of the cake will be buttercream.

I briefly thought about fondant for our wedding cake but although it LOOKS pretty and clean it doesn't taste as good as a traditional icings.

Yuck...Fondant. We are having a carrot cake with whipped cream cheese frosting. You couldn't pay me to pay for fondant. The stuff is downright nasty. I don't think you have to forgo an elaborate design to have a good tasting frosting. Kathy's daughter's cake is proof postive of that.

    Kathy....Love your daughter's cake!

Fondant cakes tend be more expensive than buttercream too! I know a bride that had marshmallow fondant and heard it was delish because it was not like the typical fondant. Fiance was determined to have a fondant but that extra $1 per slice was a NO, plus we found a baker and her buttercream cakes looked smooth like fondant.
