Why Fondant????

Keisha, on January 9, 2011 at 1:42 AM Posted in Planning 0 39

I have looked at several pastery shops and cake decorators. I really would like to know why everyone is using that fondant crap. It usually looks nice. Sometimes it makes the cake look like a wax sculpture. It also tastes like crap. Does anyone else have a problem with that? No one wants to ice a cake the old fashioned way anymore.

I hate fondant, it's tastes horrible. If you want a more elaborate cake, they are going to have to use fondant. I had regular icing, but had the cake slightly unusual so I didn't have to go the fondant route.

A lot of bakeries are using fondant because it gives a much more sculpted and smooth look whereas buttercream icing can be made smooth, but is not as sculpted and flawless. Alot of designs cant be done in icing that can be done in fondant as well. I know most bakeries will do icing if you tell them thats what you want versus fondant. But then it all depends on where your located as well. I personally like the look of fondant. But i'm partial as I am having a zebra print wedding cake.

Zebra-You should watch My Fair Wedding this season. A bride like you does a zebra/jungle theme. Don't know when it airs though!

As for the fondant...Maybe it's just my upbringing but I am not a picky frosting person. I will admit I love buttercreme but frosting is frosting...

To some extent, you have to make a choice between a cake that looks as good as possible and one that tastes as good as possible. We went for taste. NotFroofy made ours, with real buttercream frosting (not the stuff made with Crisco). It wasn't elaborately decorated, but it was delicious!

I had butter cream and it looked almost as smooth as that gross expensive stuff.

Well I like the look of fondant, but I don't eat icing anyway , so it's not that big of a deal to me. I'll just eat around it.

I absolutely hate fondant. That's why when I looked at bakeries I only went to those who could do great work in buttercream. Booked my bakery yesterday. Not only will the cake taste fab, it will look great too.

Fondant is edible; meaning it just won't be toxic if you eat it. It is used because it is pretty. Just like nobody eats those sugar flowers on the cake either, but it won't make you sick if you do.

Bakers often know it will be picked away and not eaten.

We are going to have decorated strips of fondant on our cake, but don't expect our guests to eat it. We want butter-cream icing.

Anytime I ever watched Ace of Cakes I winced a little bit at how much they had to touch the fondant to get it to do what they wanted it to do. I realize they wash their hands and all, but all that touching!!! Just waaaaay too many hands on the food. If they were baking it AFTER touching it like that, it wouldn't bother me as much.

Our cake was buttercream and beautiful. So many people have told me it was the best cake they have ever eaten. In my experience, your guests will appreciate the taste and it doesn't have to be taste or looks. You just need to find the right baker.

I'd go for taste..fondant is typically waaay more expensive..also I've talked to 2 cake bakers who were very nice and honest and they all basically said don't do fondant lol. I guess it kinda cracks off anyways when you cut it.

I am doing fondant just because I am having an unusual cake. The taste of it is a bit blah to me, however our cake vendor comes to the reception, cuts the cake, peels the fondant off, and then serves it to the guests. They will still serve the fondant on the side, just incase people do want to eat it. So I will get the fondant look with the buttercream taste.

I am having a tiramisu cake and the baker was relieved when I said no fondant. Apparently it is heavy and it could smash the soft cake I am having. I am using a very simple style with real orchids on it, so buttercream for me.
