Why are limos so expensive?

Shileta, on November 7, 2012 at 2:22 PM Posted in Planning 0 26

I knew having a May wedding would add to the cost things. But the markup on limos in my area is so outrageous. I have a total of 12 in my wedding party, including FH and myself. The cheapest quote I've received so far is $1800. There's even a minimum 8 hour reservations in May-June. Our host hotel doesnt offer shuttle service and I really dont want my WP to have to drive. Is anyone else suffering from transportation sticker shock?

May and June are prom months, so that is possibly why you are finding minimums and possibly seasonal mark-ups. And a limo for 12 is going to be pretty good size, which is always more expensive.

I didn't have to provide transportation, so I don't really have any suggestions. Good luck though!

A few brides did a school bus, trolley or what about renting a 15 passenger van and paying someone to drive the WP to and from the Hotel.

I was going to look into renting a 15 passenger van and pay a friend of FSIL to drive our guests between the hotel & wedding venue since our hotel doesn't offer a shuttle either.

We recently did a search for limos in the DMV area and were quoted some crazy prices too. One of the companies told my FH that the prices are higher during that time of year because of prom.

How far/ long do you need the limo to take you? You might be better off having your WP's dates drive you from teh church to the reception and getting taxi gift certificates for your BP to get from teh reception home. call the taxi companies and ask for quotes from said place to WP houses and get them vouchers accordingly. Even 2 one to get home and one to get car following day. Will save you TONNES

I actually reserved 3 large SUV's for rent as a backup. But the logicstics of who's driving what to where is giving me a headache. All of my BMs are from out of town, the GM's are local. There's actually a 5 mile perimeter from the hotel to the church and to the reception venue.

I really had no idea that this would be such a large ticket expense.

Im guessing the answer to your question is: Because demand is high.

What about arranging for a car service? Here in NY there are car services that use Black Town Cars that fit at least four people each. They are more pricey than a taxi but I believe it will be less expensive than a limo - and you don't have to have a minimum hour requirement.

In our experience Limos are so expensive because they have the driver wait for you on location incase you need them again during that time for any reason. If price is an issue see if they will do a set pick-up / drop-off time ( sort of like a taxi ) and that may cut down on price.

Also because gas is about $4.00 per gallon, here at least.......and demand is high during certain months.

We ended up choosing not to have one. I have an SUV that will be our get away car. Our wedding party will be getting ready at the venue. So, there is no need for the limo. Our wedding is in one place and then we are going to a B & B for the honeymoon night that is across town. The morning after we will be going on a 7 day cruise. The B & B we are staying at allows us to keep the car parked there and takes us to the dock for the cruise at no extra charge.

Look for party bus or wedding bus. They are much cheaper than 1800 a night. Remember when you rent a SUV you have to have the driver rent them.

They are so expensive because of the vehicle, the driver, the license for car and human. Then there is insurance and gas etc.
