Who pays for wedding reception?

I just got engaged four days ago (yay!) and I've got a million questions but this post is just about who pays for what. I know it's traditional for the bride's family to pay for the wedding but someone told me that the grooms family is supposed to pay for the reception - is that true? Is that a...

I just got engaged four days ago (yay!) and I've got a million questions but this post is just about who pays for what. I know it's traditional for the bride's family to pay for the wedding but someone told me that the grooms family is supposed to pay for the reception - is that true? Is that a thing? I asked my future mother-in-law about it and she said that wasn't true but that they could share the expense of the reception with my family.

What is the typical division of expense??

According to traditional etiquette, a bride's family typically pays for the wedding and reception, while a groom's family would pay for the rehearsal dinner - but do whatever is best for you and your families!

    @ MrsA - Sometimes people have to hear things repeatedly before they're convinced. It's easy enough to write off one or two people that say something you don't want to hear. It's harder to ignore dozens and dozens of people who all say the same thing. Just my two cents, and also why I sometimes chime in on a thread even if it's just to say that I agree with PPs.

    Me and my FH paid for our wedding ourselves. He parents did however offer and paid for our venue. My parents paid for our reception food. The rest we paid for ourselves.

    Yeah, came down here to say the same thing as the 60+ PPs. Everything is on you and your FH (congrats, BTW!) The one thing I've learned is that everyone has an opinion on how your wedding should go. When you're paying, no one can hang anything over your head to try and influence you.

    My parents are paying for the wedding and reception and FH parents are paying for the rehearsal and we are paying for the honeymoon
