Who Is The Most Educated In Your Relationship/ Marriage?

The Bride, on July 18, 2019 at 5:25 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 90

Studies show that most colleges and universities are filled with women. As a result, the chances of a woman being the most educated person in a relationship are likely.

Who is the most educated in your relationship/ marriage? Has that caused any issues? Do you think that the partnership should pay for that education or the individual who incurred the debt?

My FH just graduated with his Masters in Social Work!! So, so proud of him! I am currently in my second year of my undergraduate degree which is biology (planning on going to medical school). He is older than me, so it makes sense! He has tons of student loans and I don't, but with medical school I will certainly end up with a ton as well. We look as our debts as "ours". We are a couple, soon to be husband and wife, and it is "our" money and "our" debt, not mine or his. Smiley smile

I am currently more educated in the sense that I have my BFA and my fiancé dropped out because he moved but he is strongly considering going back to school to get a degree in Marketing or some aspect of Business. It hasn’t been an issue by any sense.

I currently am, as I have my Doctorate for Physical Therapy. However, my FH is going for his Master of Electrical Engineering next fall, with ambition to go to law school. Since we are both very into education, this has never caused any issues in our relationship, especially since we are continuously trying to better ourselves individually and as a couple. As for the debt aspect, we feel that any debt individually affects us as a couple, so we work together to decrease the debt accrued.

My fiancée and I both have our bachelors degrees and have talked about going back to school in the future. I didn’t graduate with any debt, but she took out a few thousand dollars.
As far as who pays for what, it really comes down to how couples finance things. When we move in November, she’ll be making more money and paying a little more towards expenses and bills. We have separate finances but we split all of our bills

Congrats to the both of you! I think that married couples should share "debts" as well although according to one of my other discussions many couples have separate bank accounts where each partner pays their own bills.

FH! He has his Bachelor's in athletic training (and is a certified and licensed Athletic Trainer) and his Master's in health promotion. I got a Bachelor's degree in advertising. I double majored in advertising and communication studies but didn't have enough credits to have a double degree. Neither of us have any school loans. My parents fully paid for my schooling, and FH had grants through undergrad and got a full ride for grad school since he was an Athletic Training Grad Assistant for the football team.

We both have our Bachelor's in Civil Engineering. He had to take out loans though and I didn't. He has paid a lot of it off but once we are married it will be both our debt.

Would you support him financially if he wanted to go back to school fulltime?

I have my BS in engineering. FH has a BA, an associates degree, and a BS in engineering now. He is also 13 yrs older than me so it makes sense he has more degrees haha. I will pursue my masters next year. FH has student debt but I do not. In a sense, it is shared debt because he can't pay "his half" of the bills because a large chunk goes to student loans.

Does it bother you that she'll be making more money? I ask because I know that is a point of tension in some relationships.

He is technically more educated, because he went to a trade school. But it was for culinary and he graduated in 6 months. Now he’s a chef and I don’t have to ever cook 😂

My husband and I have a goal to be able to pay for my future children to go to college if they don't get scholarships, it's always better to leave school with no debt.

Definitely me. I have 2 masters degrees. But I'm also in civil service. My husband will be just finishing up paying undergrad when my public service loan forgiveness kicks in.
