White gold e-ring... tell me I did the right thing!

Wifey To Be!, on July 29, 2010 at 12:29 AM Posted in Planning 0 23

Okay so I loveeeee my e-ring... and it's 18K white gold... well I have only had it for about a month and a half and I'm noticing a few scratches on the bottom (palm side) of it..really not noticable unless you're really looking..I've also read a lot about white gold turning yellow and needing rhodium plating or dipping. Soo...

1. is this normal to have scratches after such little time?

2. I got my Ring from the Jeff Cooper collection at Orr's jewelers... does anyone know if they cover the dipping/plating for free? Does all white gold need dipped because they didnt say anything to me about it which i wish they would have

3. How often approx. will I need to get my ring dipped?

Sorry for so many questions but it's on my mind! lol Platinum just seemed so expensive :/ Tell me I'm not stupid for picking white gold! lol

I know! Like when we went and picked it out I asked for white gold but I wish she would have made me aware of what I was getting myself into with this dipping stuff! I'm hoping mine doesn't turn yellow for a while!

The only thing i know is that 18k is softer then say 14k so maybe thats why it scratch so easily...IDK.

I have been wearing mine for over 2 years..only took it off to clean it. I've made bread, cleaned, worked outside, you name it! Mine was completely fine! Mine is 14k white gold..I don't know if that makes a difference? I just got mine dipped, buffed and polished today because the wedding is in 9 days and I want it to look absolutely brand new..and it does!! Mine was done at no charge as I got it done at the place I bought it..I have heard through other WW girls that if places do charge, it is around $30. Your ring will be fine, it doesn't noticeably turn yellow, just less bright, and I only barely noticed it on the underside of my ring. If you have to, just have it dipped a week before the wedding and it will look 100% brand new!

Yes, all white gold needs to be dipped-and your right, that fact should be stated much more often. most jewelry stores have a service plan that either comes iwth the ring or that you can purchase for like $80. Generally, the rhodium dipping is included in that. usually the service plan is life long. not sure how often...I think 1 1/2-2yrs.

Yeah all white gold does that...i just got mine dipped, but my jeweler did not include that in the warranty so i had to pay for it. It cost me 50 bucks, but its completely 100% worth it!

Just for reference, I have a white gold ring with a star sapphire in it that my mother gave me for Christmas when I was 13. I've never had it dipped. It's not yellowed at all, 11 years later, and I NEVER take it off. Yes, you will have to get it dipped eventually, but unless it's A) crap or B) really abused, it should be fine for quite a long time.

As for scratches, that's going to happen whether it's white or yellow gold. Gold is an extremely soft metal and scratches easily. However, having it cleaned and buffed should take care of that. My rings are from Kays and I get free cleaning and buffing every six months as part of the lifetime warranty.

Mine is 18k white gold. It is a Tacori ring. I feel like it is well made but we decided to put our money into the diamond instead of getting platinum. Mine does scratch really easily on the back side though. The front is covered with pave diamonds so it's always sparkly. I've had my ring for a little over 6 months and just took it in for the warranty inspection. They also cleaned and polished it for free. Once they did that it looked like new again. Personally, I don't think it's a big deal. I'm the only one that notices the back side gets like that...and I can take it to my jeweler for a free cleaning & polishing whenever I want. Overall we are both happy with our decision to save the money on platinum.

Did you buy the warranty with the ring? If so, a list of the services included should be in your paperwork. Our warranty includes: engraving, resizing for life, soldering, polishing, redipping, cleaning, and replacement of diamonds, prongs, etc. It was only $99 and I feel

White gold will always need to be redipped - but how often is a factor of so many things. Personal preference, your own body chemistry (how fast the rhodium wears down), how color sensitive you are, etc. I would only get it dipped every 2 years or so, and it's very affordable. If you're concerned about the scratches, it's a good thing you went with gold instead of platinum. Platinum scratches a lot more (forms a beautiful patina, IMO), but it never loses any of its weight. Gold scratches less, but each scratch is actually physically taking away some of the gold. It can be rebuffed, but don't do it too often, as it will thin your band over time.

Thanks for the help ladies! Does anyone know if when you get your band redipped if they need to file it so the rhodium will stick? I'm worried if this is true cause my ring has a thinner setting already and I don't want it to wear down to nothing!

White gold scratches and platinum bends... its a lose-lose. I'm so clumsy that I rather have a few unnoticeable scratches then it be shaped funny. I have a few scratches on the palm side as well. Our jewelry store told us we would need it dipped every 10 years. I'm not sure on that, but if mine starts turning yellowish before then, I'm getting it dipped.

The ring is gonna scuff b/c the inside of your hand where the bottom of the ring rests gets the most contact. It's on the bottom. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Mine is scuffed too. I'll just have hubby take it to get it cleaned & buffed. But it really doesn't bother me. Nobody sees it.

Mine has scuffs on it like there's no tomorrow! esp working in a lab, it hits every counter, chair, glass, etc. I'm worried the friggen diamond itself will crack one day.

My ring is 18k white gold. It's from 1912, and as far as I know, it has never been dipped (it's been sitting in my aunt's jewelry box for decades...it was my great grandmother's). I wear my ring everyday - since August 2009. It's still completely 'white' - no yellowing at all. I guess it's possible it could have been dipped before it was given to my FS, but I've still been wearing it for almost a year (I never take it off - bad I know). Is this not normal?

My ring is also 18k white gold. I absolutely love it. It does turn yellow throughout time so you do need to get it dipped. I had mine dipped about 4 years ago and its time again to get dipped but took about that time to go back to yellow but its normally no more than $40 per ring (have to get my wedding ring done as well.) I think you will be very happy with your ring. Smiley smile
