Which is worse- dry weddings or hay bale seating?

I'm bored. Every few days there will be a post here about dry weddings and people jump on to exclaim that they HAVE to have something alcoholic, it's rude, blah blah-but no one ever asks about their stupid hay bale seating plan. Hay bales are not comfortable. They are especially horrid if you have ANY guests with any mobility or chronic pain issues. Making people stand around while you have a 20-30 minute ceremony on a beach or in the woods is unfair too.

So if you went to a wedding, would you be more ticked off if there weren't any actual seats or if all of the drinks were non-alcoholic?

We are doing hay bale seating at our wedding. However each bale will have a cushion wrapped in muslin and quilt squares so it should be comfortable. I've tested them out. Our venue didn't have chairs to accommodate where we wanted to do our ceremony and the chair legs would have sunk really bad anyway due to the nature of the pasture our ceremony is in so hay bale seating seemed like a much better choice. We also don't have anyone with allergies in attendance though.

This is essentially what our cushions are going to look like.

And honestly, white garden chairs are like $1.75/each to rent. Spend $ for CHAIRS.

@ Sqwiggy- it is a block of hay. It is itchy and makes you sneeze and it is horse food-I would rather sit on a stack of fancy feast, but that's not a thing Smiley smile

I'd take a dry wedding over no/uncomfortable seating.

I've had to leave weddings/other big occasions in the past because my joints were causing me such grief because of daft seating choices. But I've never batted an eyelid at not having a drink (well, alcoholic drink)

@Cierra: I am a quilter, so I like your patchwork cushions. Very cute. If you have any older guests whom you are just not sure about, could you put down two 4x8 sheets of plywood on the ground and put some chairs on top to make a 16' row reserved for them? Just a thought.

Are we talking about hay bales seats just for the ceremony or the entire evening? I wouldn't sit on a hay bale but if the ceremony is 30 min. or less, maybe I'd be OK with standing up. If I had to stand and/or sit on a hay bale for longer than 30 min, I'd probably leave. I have scoliosis and one leg shorter than the other, so I can't stand that long.

Regarding booze, I don't drink much so normally I'd be OK at a dry wedding, but also I normally don't attend events that are longer than 4 hours, so I feel like I'd need at least a drink or two to be able to party for as long as a reception lasts.

I would mind if I had to sit on hay because severely allergic or if I couldn't sit. I have fibromyalgia and lupus so it's hard to sit or stand for extended periods of time. If the beach wedding or forrest wedding had seats I wouldn't mind at all. I don't think it's that big of a deal of there isn't any alcohol. You can go 6 hours without a drink.

Dry wedding is worse, hands down. Hay bales suck...but not having any alcohol to wash away the pay with is more annoying.

I'm going with hay bale seating....

but maybe cause i've sat on a hay bale for 30 min and it is a terrible experience (sadly it did not have lovely quilts....)

And I'm an adult who knows how to sneak in a flask ;]

@sara b thank you. we had originally planned on trying to do something so we could have some actual chairs for FHs grandmother to sit in. However she passed away a few weeks ago and she was the only elderly guest we had (I don't have any living grandparents and neither does he now). Other than that no one has any mobility problems or health issues that would cause a conflict. So we might just skip trying to figure out something with chairs. Our guest list is on the smaller side, and since it's a destination wedding we might not have as many people show anyway.
