When would you start to buy?

Rock&Rhodes, on March 7, 2020 at 11:09 AM Posted in Planning 0 12

I'd decided it was best not to buy anything wedding related until after I move in 6 months time, as we're still newly engaged. But a few things I had my eye on have all gone on sale, and I'm feeling like I should get something whilst it's on offer. They're all things on etsy, so I don't necessarily have the security of knowing it will still be there later. How would you play this scenario?

I personally wouldn't want to store wedding items for 2 years, but if you have the space, go for it.

I bought items for the first time last weekend and we’re 7 months out.

I bought rubber stamps on Etsy that I'll use for invitations since that's sooner than the actual wedding. I'm also asking my mother and SIL to slowly pick up second hand chinoiserie for the decor since it's a theme I've stuck to for the entire wedding. It's the only decor-related thing I know I won't change my mind about. 😅 I suggest only beginning with things that are central to your overall theme and maybe things that will take time to "collect". But if you're really worried about these items being gone, they must be important to you so that's what matters. 👍

If you are 8 to 7 months out you are good to go. Not just storing items bc your ideas or style for your wedding may change. I didnt start until recently and my wedding in May 2020 this year. However whatever works for you.

Honestly, I started buying things as soon as I started to find things I liked. If you have the space do it! I would start with the little things though, that’s what I did and thankfully my ideas didn’t change. I’m now about 3 months out and I only need maybe 4 or 5 more things and I’ll be all set. I also did it that way so it wasn’t dropping a ton of money all at one time.

I started buying things right away but I’ve been in the same house for 2 years now so I knew I wasn’t going anywhere! Depending on the size of the items, could you just purchase a large tote from some place like Walmart and store the items in one place until the move? That’s probably what I would do if I was in your shoes! Smiley smile

I bought a number of wedding things from Etsy. When we first got engaged I saved everything I liked and would consider on Etsy (13 months until the wedding) I didn’t order anything because I wanted to be sure about all other decor and whatnot for that day. I ordered the cake topper, guest book, and card box 2 months ago (so 4-5) months out. I did end up getting the initial cake topper I liked over a year ago but changed styles on the other two. So i personally wouldn’t recommend ordering that soon, there are too many others details you won’t know until closer to the date.

I would wait until I had a venue booked and closer to the wedding unless I knew I could return it. Some of my ideas costed more than my budget as time went on. Also I ended up with 2 more tables / 10 more people so had I bought centerpieces I would be short.

I’m planning on starting all the buying 8 months before. I think the most important thing right now is doing your research. Get quotes for venues and vendors, select a color scheme (because you’ll question at least twice), make a vision board, start a planner, etc. I’m very particular about planning so I looked for venues and vendors for 6-8 months before settling.

Buy what you know will be gone and store it with a family member or friend. I’ve been doing that for 2 yrs and am more than good lol!

If it's something you've loved for a while, buy it! I bought my shoes before anything else because the style I love is always sold out in white and they just happened to get restocked the day after I got engaged. Unless you're afraid your style preferences might change, I'd take advantage of the deal!
