When someone gets engaged etiquette

AlexisM082, on June 29, 2015 at 12:23 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 36

When FH and I got engaged, there were a few people who sent cards. One sent money. One sent a picture frame. My cousin just got engaged and I realized.... I have no idea what the etiquette is. We already picked up one of those cute Papayrus cards, but do we send anything with it? They're in NY and we're in AZ. We're not crazy close, but they are invited to our wedding. I've found so many different suggestions on Google so now I'm just at a loss. So what should I do?

I don't know what etiquette is, but we only got gifts from our engagement party. Everyone who didn't come/wasn't included maybe sent a card.

We only received cards from a few people. I think a card is fine.

Yea we definitely won't be going to their engagement party. It's next weekend and I found out about everything from his sister who's in my BP.

Engagement gifts? I don't think you're obligated to send anything, but a card is a nice thought. I may be a horrible person, but I think anything more than a well wish and congratulations is silly. Heck, we got engaged the night before our annual holiday party so we joked that it was an engagement party, but I would have felt awkward if anyone brought a gift. We got a few cards from people who saw it on FB, and that was sweet. I think you're ahead of the game thinking of them and sending a nice card.

Ok good Smiley smile I thought it'd be nice. I would have enjoyed more than the 5 cards we recieved and we were both super grateful for people even taking the time to send a card! Thanks Ladies!

A couple friends got me wedding magazines, my planning binder and then a mug with my future last initial but I really wasn't expecting any of that. A congrats in any form (card, call, post) is enough I think.

We also haven't received anything much by way of gifts or cards, except from my two best friends who are also BMs. I created them each an Engagement basket when they got engaged with a cute white storage tub, champagne, 2 champagne glasses, card, nail polish, cute notebook, wedding magazine, a decoration letter of their soon to be new last name for decoration in their home, and a wedding movie. I almost feel like I made it a thing between the three of us, but it's been fun gifting each other when we each got engaged. They got me wooden decoration blocks that say "Always" "&" "Forever" and letter C notes and envelopes. My other best friend got us cute wood/glass picture frame holder that has the quote "love makes a house a home." It'll look nice in our home once we make our transition to a rustic look when we move into a house. Other than the gifts from my two best friends, I haven't received anything else, nor expect to receive anything else. We are not having an engagement party, but I know someone is hosting a Bridal Shower for me.

We didnt expect anything, we just wanted to celebrate and invited friends over and a different night my parents did a dinner for immediate family. Most people just gave us bottles of alcohol or a cute card, my favorite part was the new wine to try Smiley smile

We got a few gifts from people really close to us. We weren't expecting anything though. A card would be a nice gesture Smiley smile

I don't think they're required and a card is fine...but if you wanted to send a small gift, something like a wedding countdown would be cute:

I don't think people really expect it but it's such a kind gesture. a card is totally fine, we received a few really cute Christmas ornaments (though we got engaged in november..so that makes more sense) and of course an issue or two of a wedding magazine is always a cute idea!

My mom sent me a card, but that was the only thing I received. No one sent gifts.

We got lots of cards and LOTS of champagne/wine bottles to celebrate, we actually still have a few bottles lol... My MOH sent me a planning book & "sweating for the wedding" tank.

I've never heard of gifting someone who just got engaged, it is a really nice gesture but I don't think it's the norm. I would think if the couple held an engagement party then a card and a small gift could be in order; but I believe if the couple just annouces their engagement then a congratulations should suffice.

We didn't get anything when we got engaged. My birthday was a few weeks later and a friend put together a wedding planning kit for me.

No gifts. Lots of phone calls, FB messages, a couple of cards.

The only "gift" we got was my MOH decorating our house and surprising up when we got home that night with some friends. Even that I thought was too much!

I don't send anything. I received one card with a $25 gift card to Target when I got engaged. I think the card is a nice idea, but any gift is totally optional.

I have never received a card nor sent one when someone got engaged. I think a card would be nice, but I see no need to include a monetary gift.

We didn't get anything from anyone. It was near my graduation though so I was getting graduation presents.
