When is the best time to buy plane tickets

Jaimie, on August 29, 2013 at 10:30 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 17

I've been less than thrilled with flight prices. I purposely planned to fly on a Tuesday because I've heard it's cheaper. We have plenty of time to buy because we are still a little over 8 months out. I'm just wondering if there is a particular time range that tickets are cheapest. Is it better to buy far out or closer to our travel date. We will be going to Montego Bay, Jamaica in mid May. Really trying not to spend over a thousand.

Jaimie from my understanding it is best to buy tickets Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday. That being said, ticket prices right now seem extremely high. I have been watching for tickets to Punta Cana and right now they are $650++!! Praying they go down before June.

I heard four months out is supposedly the best? And I agree with FutureMrsHicks about the day of the week!

Where are you flying out of? I always look on Kayak first since it gives you the cheapest dates on a little calendar, followed by the cheapest flights found online for that itinerary. The only airline they don't include is Southwest.

    Happy shopping!

ETA: I just did a quick search and it looks like Delta might be your cheapest option? What are your exact travel dates and where would you prefer to fly out of? (Sorry if I'm being too nosey, I love to book travel!) Smiley smile

I've found that Jamaica is expensive to fly to. We were looking for a honeymoon there and they wanted 600+ for each of us to fly. Also depends on the season, time of day etc

K & A: We will be flying out of Philadelphia on May 13 (A tuesday). I will look at Kayak. Currently the best price is 563 with America Airlines. I will def keep the 4 month mark in mind. I think I have an extra check in Jan so that should work in our favor.

Priceline has a graph where you can look up the lowest price during the previous year for the fight you are wanting.

Between 6 to 8 weeks prior.

If you can be a little flexible in your travel dates and times, it will work to your advantage.

I can tell you as a travel agent prices are up due to fuel costs so don't expect prices from years past. I used to get my clients LA to Florida under $300. Now if its $400 or under I tell them to book it asap.

Airports also matter. So the bigger the airport the cheaper the flight its not always where your going. Also I find I get better deals when I book one airline one way and a different back for clients.

One more thing and its very important make sure you drink lots of Rum Cream!! OMG its amazing!! Impossible to fine in the US.

I remember when I was looking up tickets every day for a Vegas trip that my friends had already booked. I was always at work looking at prices and they were always going up until one day I woke up extra early before work and went on my laptop and decided to check. It was probably around 5:30am and the prices were so much cheaper. I realized that the prices were going up throughout the day!

I tracked my flights for London with yapta.com I bought them at 4 months out for the cheapest price and tracked the price for 2 months. Definitely helped because they send an email when there is a significant drop in price. The most expensive I had seen while looking was $1100, and I got mine for $914.

It doesn't vary day to day, you just have to REALLY stalk the prices, check them everyday. Our wedding is in AL...flights have varied A LOT. Some guests paid $500...even though I advised against it. The best round trip deal I found and sent around was $240 on Delta. Every morning I would spend 10 minutes on travel sites seeing what the prices are. FHs and I flight is $100 each.

We booked a trip last year to Punta Cana in May. The price difference for flights from the second week to the third week were huge. Play around with dates too.

I honestly don't think 500-600$ is a lot for a round trip flight to the Caribbean. I mean, that's just what it costs! I have heard that flights on Tuesdays are less expensive, but you have to go so you might as well book soon so you can get on the flight. If they add too many people to the flight, you might get bumped off to a later flight and nobody wants to sit in the airport waiting for another flight when they are leaving for their honeymoon. Our flight is in February to Montego Bay and we already have our seats picked out Smiley smile

Take advantage of sites like tripadvisor.com and Travelocity. You put in the airports you want to fly from and to, and the site will monitor prices. You will get an email once the price goes down whatever you specify.

I had read that around 6 weeks prior is the best time. I find that hard to do though because I start worrying. I think Wednesdays are big for flight sales. Also, sometimes when I use Kayak I don't get as cheap flights as through Expedia, even though it's supposed to be included.

I always try to purchase on a Sunday Tuesday or Wednesday. My best deals have been on line after 11 p.m. and as earlier as 5 am Good Luck
