When do you sign the marriage license?

Gettingmarriedin2016, on August 15, 2016 at 6:11 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 29

I need two witnesses and my officiant to sign my marriage license. Do we sign it during the ceremony? If we don't sign it during the ceremony when would be a better time to do so?

I've always seen it done immediately after the ceremony.

Some couples sign it as part of their ceremony then their MOH and BM would be their witnesses.

I've seen before, during and after. The only during I saw was a self-officiating ceremony (Quaker marriage license in PA). you should figure out who you want your witnesses to be and the best time for you and them to sign.

My first marriage we signed it after the ceremony. This time DH and I and witnesses signed at rehearsal dinner and officiant signed at reception.

My officiant was Very Firm that we do it right after the ceremony-- I think she'd had to hunt people down too often.

We are signing it during the ceremony!

I talked to the officiant about it and told him I feel like it just makes it really official if we do it all at once. It's stupid, but he's humoring it and I'm very excited.

We signed ours the night before the ceremony as our officiant was DHs cousin and we were all there for the rehearsal anyway. It was nice to not have to worry about keeping track of it the day of the wedding.

For my cousin that got married we (MOH and BM signed the night before during rehearsal. The priest pulled us apart just before rehearsal started. Not sure if that's standard or not. I honestly didn't even realize it was their marriage license hahaha

Depends on where you live - in NC, the couple signs the ML when it is issued at the Register of Deeds office then the officiant and the witnesses sign after the ceremony ( I work at a county ROD office)

It depends on the state. In CT, you sign it at the town or city hall when you get it. The officiant signs it after the ceremony and sends it back to the town, then you get your certified copy in the mail a few weeks later.

We are signing ours during, too. We are not religious and I am not crazy about things like sand ceremonies, so it feels like something of a ritual to include it. I'm excited to officially get married, as we get married Smiley smile

We had to sign ours at the town hall. Then the pastor and BM and MOH signed after the ceremony.

Our Officiant said we sign it at the rehearsal and then he signs off and mails back after our ceremony.
