When do you sign the marriage license?

I need two witnesses and my officiant to sign my marriage license. Do we sign it during the ceremony? If we don't sign it during the ceremony when would be a better time to do so?

In NJ, you don't even sign it. I have the witnesses sign it before the ceremony and then I'm out of everyone's hair afterwards.

We want to sign ours at the ceremony. We want to have our first kiss as officially husband and wife.

In Florida, the form consists of 3 parts: the top part is the Marriage License Application to marry and the couple signs that at the county courthouse when they get it. The middle portion is the Marriage License and the Clerk signs it at the courthouse before giving it to the couple. The bottom part is the Marriage Certificate. That is the part that the witnesses (not required) and the officiant sign AFTER the ceremony (because the officiant is stating s/he married them and the witnesses are stating that they saw it happen). The officiant and witnesses do NOT sign it before the ceremony!!!!

We filled out all of our copies (there were 3 in Michigan, the top for us and the other two to send back) before the ceremony except for the signatures on the top copy. Since we had a very short ceremony, it gave us a little more length, and we got some compliments on including it.

In VA, we signed it at the clerk of courts when we got it. We never signed it at the ceremony and no witnesses had to sign it, just the officiant.

It varies by state, your officiant will know what is required for your state.

I think we signed ours right after. My MIL was in charge of making sure we got everything right. I'm pretty sure we signed it and our minister held onto it since he was planning to file for us

We signed ours when we applied for it; no witnesses except for the clerk who verified all our information. It was so easy and one less thing we had to worry about the day of the wedding. We gave the license to our priest during the rehearsal which he signed and mailed to city hall.

Ours was signed immediately after the ceremony. Our recessional took us right to a patio where the witnesses and officiant signed while the guests went inside for cocktail hour. In Missouri the bride and groom do not sign. Our signatures when we got the license at the courthouse was our signing.
