What style of bride are you - and show me the dress that shows it (the one!)?!

Laura, on June 3, 2020 at 3:10 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 23

I thought that maybe other brides might have struggled to figure out "What kind of bride they wanted to be" like I did. So, I thought I'd show how I finally figured it out...

Dress 1. What others thought I should wear and felt a bit retro (like 90s retro). Dress 2. I knew I wanted romantic, but in the end this felt too young and was missing something - and I think the first silhouette looked better. Dress 3. FINALLY - A dress I love! Romance, interesting lace, sexy - yay! ... Then Covid postponed the big wedding and I needed an elopement dress - plus alterations costs were absurd for a 5 person wedding. But, how was I going to find another "one"?

Dress 4. Randomly, I asked FH to describe me - I remembered that trying to figure out what kind of bride you wanted to be was the challenge in why it is so hard to find the right dress (Thank you, Randy, SYTTD). My FH said sophisticated - that's a word I've never used at a salon or to describe me - ever. He pointed out that I like vintage and romantic, but said sophisticated sums me up best... He had a hard time explaining it, but I thought I understood. I hope I love the elopement dress in person (#4) when it arrives on Friday, no stores have it yet. If not I can return it and try - again. I don't want to though, I want this to be the one.

Dress 4 gives the better silhouette like dress 1, it has the interesting lace that I love from 2 and 3, and a different neckline (I like interesting necklines), and then sleeves (which are a bit unexpected) ... Hopefully it's the best of all of them combined.

I thought about dresses 1-3, they were romantic, felt vintage - but would you say they were sophisticated? I'm hoping that's the missing link that explains why those were all contenders (I do own dress 3). So, ladies who are you and does your dress reflect you?? Do you have dress regret? Tell me your story...

*Let's not forget the sexy leg split. Ha! Smiley tongue I also wanted to wear my hair down like the model, I think my oversized dangle earrings will work, and my strappy rose gold shoes... It's all coming together - I hope! Smiley heart

I had a vision of what I wanted and believe it or not, I was watching the Oscars, GBs, or some award show and started looking at stars and the style dresses they were wearing, comparing their body types to mine and seeing / thinking if that would look good on me.

I went to a boutique - tried on what I thought I wanted and decided (said to the sales girl) - I felt like Charlie Tuna from Sunkist. Nope...that was NOT my style.

I found a beautiful, classic style with ruched waist and the dress spoke to me. The sales girl and my mom and I instantly knew this was the dress. Mainly because I wore the dress. I made the dress beautiful, the dress didn't make me. On my wedding day, I want people to see ME - the dress should accessorize me, not the other way around.

It's a simple, classic and perfect style - it only took 4 dresses to realize this is the one. ZERO regrets.

Oh this is stunning! I love when our ideas and reality have a reckoning. It's odd how we can be so sure and then be like - nope. I think the dress you found is perfect! I can't wait to see if mine feels like I am wearing it rather than it wearing me! I have to shop alone, no family or friends live within states of me. It's been hard.

    Congratulations!! Smiley heart

I’ve always loved really unique clothing and items. Never been afraid to wear bold colors and what not but when it came down to wedding gowns I thought I wanted something very classic kind of like the first dress in your photos. But then I ended up hating it on my figure so I went with something else that I ended up feeling like yea this is more ME because it’s unique and a dress I’ve not seen elsewhere. So in the end I’m happy with what I went with. I thought I wanted something more traditional but in the end I went with something moreso unique

Oh I love that this is different! I do think that they all start to look alike! Mermaid/flare, sheer in places, spaghetti straps or strapless, plunges (front and back), etc. On me, and probably only me, every dress I tried on seemed to be the same or just wasn't a contender. It's so hard trying not to be cookie cutter. I love the details on yours - down to the chest strap and embellished waist. I think it's amazing. I'd say ... maybe quirky in the best way! I love it!!!

Thank you! that's exactly how it started to feel, actually - that the dresses all start to kind of look alike. i had thought that's what i wanted too because i guess i was just googling wedding dress gowns and thought oh these are so pretty but then those were the only styles really popping up. i wasn't seeing anything truly unique. until one day i happened across this particular dress and decided to get it. it was a choice that completely surprised me because it was just something i didn't expect to choose. wedding dresses DO start to look kind of cookie cutter

I love this! I do hope that mine (#4) looks a little different too. It's hard, I've been engaged for nearly 2 years. And I've had 4 dates - 3 due to Covid. I'm exhausted from dress shopping and would love to be done. Hopefully, the dress when it arrives on Friday works - I have a dress with a similar waistline, so I am very hopeful. I also have ordered David's dresses before so I know that I purchased the right size and it should zip and fit with little issue. I just hope that I like the lace in person. You look amazing! Will you wear your hair up? What is the back like? I'm so curious!

*I do think that I can shorten the sleeves if needed - my minimony is in Sept in Missouri - so I expect it to be on the warmer side. Eeep.

I was engaged once before, tried on tons of dresses, and realized eventually that none of the dresses felt right because my relationship wasn't right. But I tried on sooo many white dresses that they all started to look the same to me. I also attended a load of weddings in that time. When I got engaged to my DH I waited as long as possible to try on dresses. I realized that I wanted something different but classic. Not different to be different, but because I'm different. To turn the wedding on its head, I ended up wearing a lavender lace gown and put my bridesmaids in ivory. The moment I put on the dress it felt so right. I broke down. My guests also had fun playing along with a black and white party for the reception. What style of bride are you - and show me the dress that shows it (the one!)?! 3

How amazing!!! My issue was that I loved so many! And finding a dress that makes me feel like he does... Giggles. I love that you went totally different! I wanted an all white wedding. My maids revolted. Lol!!!

Remember long sleeves add extra temperatures to the dress. It’s getting soooo hot now already, I can’t imagine how I would feel on my July outdoor wedding 🥵 I think I have to have my hair up, because I easily get red face and I will sweat in my dress 😬

For me I want a romantic and elegant dress that fits my figure. I am so indecisive and picky 😩 I am already short, and wearing a ballgown or mermaid with huge puff makes me look shorter. These are 4 from 17 dresses I tried. These are all the rejects. The last picture was my 2nd favorite. What style of bride are you - and show me the dress that shows it (the one!)?! 6

I ended up with a dress that was totally not what I thought I would get! My "dream dress" going into it, was lace, cap sleeves, and I liked either slim fit or mermaid style. I ended up with a strapless A-line with a beaded design. But it was perfect! I can't say I knew it right away when I tried it on (this dress was #8 out of 8 that I had tried on in one day, and I was just totally overwhelmed!) but when I couldn't stop thinking about it for a week after, I knew it was the one. Then when I told my mom and my MOH (who went shopping with me) that there was one dress I couldn't stop thinking about, they both knew exactly which one I was talking about before I specified, so that really solidified my decision!

I had second thoughts about pretty much EVERYTHING wedding-related, but shockingly not my dress! I always loved it, never had a doubt in my mind about it Smiley smile

Not sure what style it's considered... what do you think?

I thought I wanted the big ball gown / a-line with long train and sleeves. I wanted with something with lace and beading and attention to detail. and not a mermaid

I wound up with a long train and attention to detail. I got a fit and flare, 3d appliques (no lace & no beading), no sleeves, but it's totally me. I'm wearing my straps on the shoulder.

Both your dresses are stunning and I love the contrast between vibes! How lucky that you get to have 2 very different looks - that's really making the most of these difficult times. Was it hard to finally make the choice? Did it come easily? If you had an entourage what did they think?

Thank you for sharing! Smiley heart

Everyone kept telling me that ball gown would fit me best and although there were a couple I liked, I just didn't feel like it was going to be something I'd feel comfortable in. Wasn't me! I knew from the jump that I wanted something with style. Something vintage but elegant with a modern twist.

After searching hell and high water, buying a dress I thought I wanted, having dress regret, canceling that and starting over, I found this gem! When I finally received it, it was everything I imagined and more! I'm a sucker for detailed trains but with this dress it has a lot going on up top already so I figured it balances out perfectly.

Ooooh. It's really pretty! And definitely has that vintage vibe, like old Hollywood. Are you going vintage with accessories? Or how will you style it? I'm really wanting to know! Smiley heart

The more modern simplistic one only came into play in the last week when we decided to get legally married on the Friday of our wedding weekend and a Saturday ceremony with everyone. I didnt want the surprise to be ruined. My original dress surprised me because it was nothing like I originally thought but it fit me perfectly and my bridesmaid and my mom just loved it Smiley smile My mom picked it up off the rack without being able to see the shape just a long detailed train.

Thank you! I will be going vintage with it for sure. I was thinking a similar bracelet like in the photo and instead of a veil doing a hair comb. I'm still looking for pieces that don't cost an arm and a leg lol. Then I want to look for a vintage style updo. Since the back of the dress has so much detail, I don't want to cover it up.

I have a pretty big scar on my clavicle from breaking my collarbone and getting surgery so I went dress shopping dead set on finding a dress to cover my scar. I tried on many different styles that achieved this but had my eye on a strapless dress I saw right when we walked in the boutique and i couldn’t get it out of my head so I went for it and it was the one! I’ve always said my fiancé feels like home and this dress felt like home. That’s how I knew it was the one ❤️What style of bride are you - and show me the dress that shows it (the one!)?! 18
