What sort of things are you doing to make your wedding unique?

Abigail, on December 22, 2019 at 6:09 PM Posted in Planning 6 21
Hi guys! I’m exactly 200 days away from My wedding (July 10, 2020) and I’m feeling pretty good about planning! I got the venue/catering/cake (all inclusive), the officiant, and the DJ booked. I’m talking to a few photographers, florists, and ceremony musicians. I feel like everything is going well and it’s going to be a beautiful wedding, but I’m nervous that it’s a little cookie cutter. Our venue is a historic old mansion but they have a ton of weddings, and the catering is exclusive so there are limited options. My colors are sage, navy, and blush, which I love but are pretty common. I just feel kind of blah and I’m trying to think of ways I could make my wedding more unique. What sort of things are you guys doing to make your wedding distinctly you?

Our wedding is during Christmastime and we love electric coffee shops, so we are buying various mugs from resale shops and using them as mugs for coffee/hot chocolate/hot cider for the guests and for their gift to take home!

The things we've picked so far feel very personal, but not necessarily unique.

One of the personal touches that we want to incorporate is our love of National Parks. We might do table names (rather than - or alongside - numbers) that are chosen in honor of our favorites. We also want to do a late night smores bar to go along with the park vibe.

My fiancé and I love hockey and even though we’re having a beach wedding, we are incorporating hockey into our decorations. Also, we both work in the alcohol industry so making sure drinks reflect us was important. Not necessarily unique.

I've seen a lot of people do different kind of bars. Such as a smores bar. For us we did a boba bar. My bff is considering doing an elote bar for hers.

We’re having a s’mores bar, cigar bar, beer burros, and a blacksmith (who will also be doing a branding for our unity ceremony) at our cocktail hour/reception. Ours is also at a historic mansion, so those, coupled with the grounds/home for backdrop should help make it somewhat unique.

This is so beautiful! I obsessively look at wedding photos and ideas even though I am not engaged and the relationship I’m in is going nowhere.
It’s kinda sad tbh. I have wedding ideas which I passed down to my children as they will likely get married before I do

For my wedding, instead of having a guest book, I got a bench made that has our names and the wedding date on it. I had everyone sign the bench so that way we can have it forever. I also had Polaroids table so that way I can get pictures from the guest without them being too professional. And all of our signs for our wedding, I made with our wedding colors. The wedding felt like us. It was very unique at least to me.

We're doing an early 11am wedding with a breakfast reception that includes a pancake bar. My FH is a police officer so there are lots of little details that speak to that as well

Our STDs and invitations were based around our favorite baseball team. So was our cake and cake topper, our centerpieces, and our seating chart.

We also staged a swordfight during our reception. (We are trained actors and so are our friends.)

A lot of people create a memorial wall with pictures of loved ones who have passed on (we did this, too).

Could you name/number your tables after something you and your FH love? Maybe have a special dance that reflects you?
There are so many little things that can be personalized.

Following. Always looking for new ideas. I was thinking of opting out of a guest book for a canvas picture of us that guest could sign. But then I start thinking about where I would I want to hang that in home later. I’m thinking about a photo booth, budget permitting

My FH and I met (and still live) in Southern California, which we love, so we’re adding in a bunch of little touches around that to make it unique. Instead of table numbers, each table will be a place in SoCal that’s meaningful to us and the tables will have a picture of us at each of these places. Instead of a guestbook, we’ve been buying up CA postcards everywhere we go and will have people write us notes on those. Our colors are a California sunset, our food is a taco bar (which is THE food of SoCal), and the song I’m walking down the aisle to is from La La Land, a movie about living in California. All of this stuff will make our wedding unique, but it took time for us to get here, it don’t just naturally come to us. My advice would be to think about what you really love, and build out from there.

Ours is at a vineyard so we are offering a wine tasting station during happy hour. We also hired a live artist which I think will be really cool. We also decided to use different/silly pictures of our dogs for all of the table numbers. Each table will have a different picture.

Instead of trying to find something that's unique, may be find something that's personal and uniquely you! Everything under the sky has been done before. Find something that you both will love and look back fondly upon

I agree with Benya who said think personal, not "unique"!

    Here are our personal things:

-Our guest book is the Strange Planet comic book that was just released. We LOVE those comics and send them to each other all the time. People need to find their favorite and leave us a note!

-Gold dinosaurs as accents -- they are our cake toppers (made by a friend for a bridal shower!) and they'll hold the info cards for the buffet dinner. Dinosaurs are a thing for me because I used to host a Dino Day party in college (totally ridiculous, we watched Land Before Time and ate dino chicken nuggets and played kickball. LOL), and now I'm a dino girl. haha.

-We're making the welcome sign. Fiance is very artsy (is a hair stylist!), so he's painting it and I'm lettering it.

-We chose a funny reading and a serious reading that we love -- which I found from the Cup of Jo blog deep in the comment sections! haha.

One of the things I kind of like about weddings is the fact that no matter how you do it, a wedding is a wedding, and I think there's something kind of sacred in participating in the sameness of two people pledging their love to one just like everyone else who ever pledged their love to one another has done. What a connected, human thing.

Our theme is "Wine & Whiskey" which is very us. Basically every wedding decision either fits within that theme, or is because we both want a big party!!

I’m just now starting my planning for a Feb 2021 wedding. The first vendor I booked is a really cool photo booth bus that sets up and has the pictures inside the bus that print on photo strips. I think that it’s different and fun. What sort of things are you doing to make your wedding unique? 1
