What should I know about serving alcohol at my wedding?

Stephanie, on June 12, 2014 at 5:25 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

My FH and I want to serve alcohol at our church wedding reception in Flagstaff, AZ. Both of our families drink a lot so an alcohol free reception is not really an option. We're not sure if the church will allow alcohol on their property because we've not asked yet. I know these rules vary widely depending on the church. But do I need any special permits or licenses or liability insurance according to AZ law to serve alcohol at my wedding?

I don't know about AZ but in MO you do not have to have a permit or license because it is not public it is a private event. Churches here in Missouri are against bringing in any alcohol.

First you need to ask your church- most churches do not allow a reception that has alcohol. Second if they do you need to talk to them on what they have for insurance. Second how are you serving the alcohol- if it's a private company they may have the insurance to cover them incase of an accident. If you are serving yourselves you will most likely need to get liability insurance just for the fact that if someone leaves drunk and has an accident you are the responsble party not the person who had the accident.

We got event insurance through home owner's insurance - we also have someone at the wedding with an OLCC permit - so in OR they can serve booze. It's not technically needed for weddings, because they're a family affair, but it was just one less thing to debate with the insurance about. If you have a caterer/bartender, I would think they should have their permits/licenses for the alcohol. You'd want to know what they cover - and what you need to cover. Obviously, start with the church first and go from there.

You should check with your municipality what they require - some require a licensed bar-tender and liability insurance

Ah! AZ booze laws. So much fun!

You will likely need to hire a bar tender or tending service with an AZ liquor license. You should still be able to supply your own liquor (buy it yourself) but will probably need the service to serve it.

I also highly recommend getting liability insurance for the reception. This is just in case something happens should guests get too wild.

We had a reception hall and brought our own alcohol in. We had to get special event coverage through our HO policy which didn't cost a thing but that was specifically for the alcohol, it was for the entire event.

Just in case anyone needs to apply and fill out an OLCC Liquor License Application form, I found a blank form in this site PDFfiller. This site also has several related forms that you might find useful.
