What is your favorite cake flavors at a wedding?

Nessanay, on April 17, 2017 at 12:49 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 31

Help me pick the flavors!!

What flavors are your favorite for cakes at weddings? cake, fillings and frosting/covering. My baker has so many options and it is hard to choose just 1 for the whole thing (especially since FH and I can not agree on fillings and flavors!).

Here is what we are thinking:

Top tier: almond cake with chocolate mousse and raspberry fruit filling with vanilla buttercream frosting

2nd tier: milk chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream and raspberry fruit filling and vanilla buttercream frosting

3rd tier: milk chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream and butter caramel filling with vanilla buttercream frosting

bottom tier: vanilla cake with chocolate buttercream and raspberry fruit filling with vanilla buttercream frosting

It gives a few different flavors (is this weird? Would you be upset as a guest to see different cake flavors going around? I don't want it to be more trouble for the employees serving the cake).

What do you think?

I think you should have one layer that does not include any chocolate. I personally like Vanilla cake with a champagne, strawberry, or raspberry filling and vanilla icing.

If I was given a piece of cake (without choice of flavor) and noticed other flavors going around I wouldn't be very happy. Perhaps you could have the servers cut the cake and leave them on a table so guests can choose their own flavor. If given a choice then I would be fine.

@Heather, yes, I originally wanted a full almond cake and was given that suggestion too. I did discuss with the baker and she said that if it is separated by another tier it would be fine since they will not actually be touching. FH and I both LOVED almond and that is really the only flavor we could agree on. Maybe I will ask her to make us a small cake and then have a 3 tier cake for guests?

@Katie - yeah that is what I am worried about. I don't want guests upset but I also don't want it to turn into a "I want this one and not that" or "Can I trade mine for this?" and it get confusing of frustrating for anyone.

@Susan - Yummy! That sounds good!

Each layer of ours will be different! We are leaning towards champagne & strawberry, banana and German chocolate with caramel drizzle and coconut shavings

4 is a lot of flavors. Guests were doing the trading at ours with only two flavors! We had almond coconut for the bottom and chocolate raspberry for the middle.

Another thought: are you keeping the top tier for your anniversary? Our top tier was the almond coconut because the denser cake freezes well!

FutureMrsE - That sounds so good! I love german chocolate cake.

MrsSkiToBe - Yeah, that is what I was afraid of lol. We will probably keep the top tier for our anniversary! I know some bakers actually make you a complimentary one for your anniversary. I may have my baker do that (pay for it if not complimentary) as I have heard that the cakes are gross after a year. LOL.

I think a lot of your tiers sound to be very similar with the raspberry chocolate and vanilla. I know when my sister got married, they did 2 tiers of the flavor they thought would be more popular (I think maybe almond with raspberry filling) and the middle tier was some kind of chocolate. I think its up to you with the options and people can always trade amongst people at their table if they really want something different, but it may be easier to just have maybe 2 flavors. Personally, I am planning to do cupcakes so people can just choose what they want.

in terms of freezing, I think it depends also on how well you wrap the cake. For my sisters, it was wrapped up in a few layers and then vacuum sealed and it still tasted pretty good a year later. I wouldn't say it was as good as fresh but then again most things aren't.

Maybe narrow it down to two? One that has chocolate and one that doesn't? I'm not a huge fan of chocolate cake and some don't like vanilla.

We're doing a white cake with lemon buttercream with raspberry filling.

@Laura and @MrsCoakleyToBe - I may do that! I will try to narrow it down to 2 with 1 chocolate option and 1 vanilla option. Smiley smile

I may ask if the top tier can still be almond for FH and I and the wedding party (none of them have nut allergies) or ask for a separate cake. Smiley smile

@OHP - Those sound so good! I wasn't sure if non traditional was a good idea but those sound SO good!.

@Kim - That is my absolute favorite but FH's absolute least favorite. LOL. Otherwise we would be doing that!

We're doing three flavors -- largest will be chocolate, then white cake with vanilla frosting and fresh strawberries, then the top two tiers will be marble cake with cookies and cream. I'm excited -- they were so delicious!

We had three different flavors and it went fine with us! We had it cut and laid out on the table though so people could choose what they wanted.

I do agree that it's a lot of chocolate and I know a lot of people that either don't like chocolate or just don't like chocolate cake. We had almond cake as one of our layers and everyone loved it! I can't remember what filling we used for it though.

A lot of old school people say chocolate is bad luck on a wedding cake I personally like the chocolate raspberry idea you have.

My daughters cake was three different flavors. The waitstaff let guests know of their choice of flavors, so they were able to get the one that they wanted.

In fact, there was extra cake, so they could have more than one flavor if those chose. ;-)

    The did:

Top their white cake with lemon

Middle tier Poppyseed cake with raspberry filling

Bottom ties Pink Champagne cake with strawberry filling.

Butter cream frosting with a dark chocolate drizzle and white chocolate calla lillies.

Edited for a typo...why oh why do I see them after I hit send? ;-)

I'd want a slice of each, they sound delicious! I think it's fine to have different flavors, but make sure the bottom tier is the most likely to be the most popular since there will be more of it.

If you messed up so did I. Lol. All 4 tiers are completely different flavor profiles. Everyone has different tastes so I don't think there's anything wrong with offering several choices. My FH is a Reece's junkie so the second tier was "secret" being peanut butter cake with chocolate fudge filling. The tiers will be labeled after cake cutting so, if guests want to forego the cake, there will be other options. This is your and FH wedding day. Just be sure to make flavorings known. Otherwise it's your cake. You are paying $300+ for it. Isn't it important that you and your FH like it?
