What is an honorary bridesmaid

Stasha, on June 20, 2012 at 12:07 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

Hello -

My oldest and closest friend will be in the Peace Corps and unable to attend our wedding. Would she be considered an honorary bridesmaid? I would like for her to be recognized in some way...

I haven't heard of that before, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Just acknowledge her in the program, I think.

I think that's a great option for your situation. Generally an honorary bridesmaid is someone who is not a bridesmaid but has helped you a lot with the wedding, or someone you would normally have as a bridesmaid but for whatever reason can't attend.

I think that's the perfect use of the role. I've seen it before and it came across to me as an adult junior bridesmaid, not exactly a bridesmaid but still in the wedding.

I think your situation actually makes more sense for the role.

I think so! From what you say it sounds like she would be in the wedding if she was able to be there.

One of my closest sorority sisters was graduating college on the same day as my wedding (horrible coincidence!) so she was an honorary bridesmaid since she could not attend the wedding or reception Smiley sad

I've never heard of this until I watched SYTTD: Bridesmaids and someone had honorary bridesmaids and even Lori wondered what the heck it was and basically it wasn't quite a bridesmaid but they were still apart of the wedding and dressed like the other bridesmaids even though the bridesmaids had an issue with that part...I think it would work for you though

I've heard of that if someone close to the bride has passed. I don't see why it couldn't use for a close living friend.

Thank you all! I know it means the world to her to be involved - sending a save the date, a BM invitation, a wedding invitation, etc.....

I think that is really sweet....maybe she can do a reading for your big day and in the phamplet you can list her as a reader/hon. bm

I love that idea! I never heard of it, but your situation sounds appropriate for it.
