What goes on a wedding invitation?

Mackenzie, on December 3, 2019 at 9:39 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4

Hi all!

I'm getting married May 23, 2020 and am in the process of designing my wedding invitations. Due to the holiday weekend and a smaller amount of people traveling from out of town, we have not done a room block for the wedding. Our family members all have different hotel preferences and I was concerned those who used the block would not actually get the discounted rate if the minimum number of rooms were not booked.

With that being said, I'm struggling on if I should even include an information card with potential hotel options, or if people will just look options up based on the venue location? Other than hotel information I'm not sure what would need to be included on the information card. Any suggestions?

Often times hotels will make a block of ten or so rooms at the lower rate without charging you anything for the block. If it’s not filled, they just release the rooms. I’ve never heard of a hotel not giving the rate if the block isn’t filled. So you can always pick a reasonably priced hotel to get a block at, and it’s up to your guests if they choose to use it. If it’s a holiday weekend, you may want to have the block just as a backup in case places book up and to avoid price increases. We have a block at the resort our wedding is at, but also included some other options on our wedding website.

Welcome to the WeddingWire community Mackenzie!!

Have you contacted any hotels close to your venue about a room block? As Jeanie mentioned, the guests that book using the room block should receive the special rate regardless of other guests staying there. Have you checked with some hotel about this?

If you decide against a hotel block, I would definitely still include some hotel suggestions for your guests. It is then their decision if they use this information or if they search for their own accommodation.

Other details that you can include on your information card is any additional info about your venue or reception (e.g. parking information), transportation details, perhaps directions for out of town guests, specific attire info and wedding website info.

I've reached out to most of the hotels in the area and they indicated if we do a block of 10 rooms but only 5 get booked, yes they'll just release the rooms but the guests that did book will be charged the going rate for the evening instead of the discounted rate because we won't have hit the minimum number needed for the discount.
I would just hate for guests to be charged extra.

I'm curious as to which hotels told you this. Our wedding has a significant portion of our guests coming from out of town - not a destination wedding - and we've been working on setting up a few different small room blocks for guests (10 rooms ea.). The hotels we talked to (Holiday Inn Express/Staybridge Suites & Residence Inn - Mariott) would just release any unused rooms not booked by the deadline.
