Wedding Registry Options for Brides Living in Europe

Whitney, on November 19, 2015 at 9:19 AM Posted in Planning 0 22

Hi lovelies!

My family is from Tennessee, but I am living in Berlin, Germany and can't quite figure out what to do in regards to our wedding registry. Does anyone else live abroad and have some pointers?

I don't want my family to ship things overseas to me from the U.S. as that would be costly for them, then I would have to pay customs fees and duties. Also, most of my friends and family at home aren't savvy enough to purchase something on a German website and have it shipped to us.

The only things I have found thus far are via ETSY or an Anthropologie UK wish list (which is still super expensive compared to the store in America because it's priced in British pounds). Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated! Smiley smile

What about going with some like Amazon that can ship globally fairly easily? http://www.amazon.com/International-Shipping-Direct/b?node=230659011

Hi @Staci Smiley smile Thanks for your idea! The problem with Amazon is that they would have to purchase items on Amazon.de in order for there to be no extra fee with customs or duties. I've check on some items from Amazon.com before and some do ship without issue from America, but it's extremely time consuming to check each individual one. There was a really beautiful decanter set we wanted, for example, but Amazon's message popped up: "Some of the items in your order cannot be shipped to the selected address. Please select a new address to see your estimated order total." All other ideas are welcome too though!

Bed Bath and Beyond? They have an international section and you can select your currency:

Or just try calling local stores that do wedding registries and see what their policy is for international guests.

For the record I have no experience with this, I just Googled "international wedding registries."

I also suggest you don't register. It's easier...your guests don't have to worry about shipping, you don't have to worry about customs.

I also live in Europe and I am making a verrry small registry in the US of things that we know we can fit in our suitcases, and reminding everyone of our restraints in shipping and in suitcase space. They cannot ship anything as anything with a value of €60 or more you have to pay 21% VAT.

Where is you FH from? If he is European it is quite normal to give cash for presents. I know we don't do gifts here, its mostly cash. Anyone I know who was in your situation didn't have a registry list and if they were asked or their family were asked what the bride and groom wanted they were told cash, as either gifts would have to shipped back to their home country at some point or if the bride and groom got married at home and were moving abroad the same reasons were stated. Nobody minds, it make sense. That way the couple can get what they need in the country that they are living in and not have to pay to ship things. Remember you could also get get could get caught for customs on items that are sent from outside of Europe. So a well meant gift could end up costing you!

Also just to add, I have a cousin who got married in Ireland and emigrated to USA shortly after with DH. 15 years later some of her beautiful wedding gifts are still in her mothers attic as they were never able to ship them, they were large and too delicate. Was such a waste..

Amazon! It's seriously the best - great selection, ships to your house. I wouldn't have done it any other way.

    Thanks all for the advice!

My darling is German, for those that asked. Smiley smile Some of my family members and friends want to give things other than cash, it's a southern thing, I think. Smiley winking

I don't want anything at all to be shipped from America because of international shipping fees/customs and duties fees, just to clarify. I was just wanting to know European specific registries, such as ETSY (Europe) or Anthropologie (UK). It would be awesome if there were something like Crate & Barrel or even Pottery Barn, but I haven't found EU/UK options with registries yet.

Ok have just done a little looking from the department stores that I know of between the UK and Ireland, many of the UK ones are possibly in Germany but their list are all from London. But I'm sure all shops from both countries will deliver to Germany. Sorry I don't know Crate & Barrel or Pottery Barn to be able to compare them.

    Brown Thomas (Irish)

    http://www.weddingshop.ie/

    Selfridges (UK)

    http://www.selfridges.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/WishListDisplayView?storeId=10052&catalogId=16151&langId=-1

Debenhams (they are all over Europe but only their english site has wedding lists)

    http://www.debenhams.com

House of Fraser (Uk, but again they have shops around europe)

    http://www.houseoffraserweddinglist.co.uk

    Harrods (London) https://giftbureau.harrods.com/

Arnotts (It's a big department store in Dublin, they have just been bought over by the weston group, (same people that own, Selfridges and Brown Thomas)

    http://www.arnotts.ie/giftregistry/

From this list Arnotts and Debehams probably have a better price range of items and varied stock. House of Fraser, selfridges and Harrods would have a wide range of items too, but can be more expensive than the other two, Brown Thomas would be similar. All are really lovely shops though!!

I'm afraid I don't know any stores on mainland Europe, but I know that there are some big ones.

Hope these will help a bit.

Amazon. I had a friend whose FW is in England and my friend went over there to get married. I asked where they were registered and she said Amazon.

A friend's daughter was marrying a military guy who would be stationed in Europe. The mom just put out the word that cash would be the best gift in their situation since the bride would be going there, too.

I am in the exact same position! My fiance is an Italian, but we are getting married back near my hometown in Texas, so doing a registry is very tough. It's made even tougher by the fact that Italians don't like to shop online, so finding things can be difficult! But we found a wedding website/registry site called zankyou.com where you can manual enter the things you want, add a picture, the price, and the number of units. You add your bank account to it and it allows your friends and family to "buy" the items for you, but it actually is transferring you the money for you to buy it in your country. We are setting ours up now, so we haven't fully tried it yet, but so far so good! Good luck! I wish it was as easy as going to Crate & Barrel or Macy's and just using the scanner, but unfortunately not...

I'm looking for a website to create my own registry, meaning: The money will be reverted in cash, but I wanted to create registries, like:

    "Paris Getaway: 200€"

I've seen american websites for that, but I didn't find any for EU. For the US I found "The Knot" and a few others.

Do you know any website in EU where I could create my registry?
The wedding website will be created on appy couple.

It’s 2022 but in a similar situation as OP from back in 2015. Living in Germany and getting married in Chicago this June. Don’t know when we will return to the US to live as work may keep us abroad for a number of years. Registry is the only remaining detail to figure out.

All family and majority of guests are US based. Grandmother would be horrified at the mere hint of cash gifts. I would love to create a registry too! Amazon is the obvious choice but I know it will be a challenge to get guests to the Amazon.de site. Zankyou.com has transaction fees and charges 2.6% of total gifted amount which might not be a big deal if their site and terminology were more sophisticated and sleek. Hoping that there are other registry options!! Suggestions anyone?
