Wedding reception at a chinese restaurant??

Ashley, on November 30, 2010 at 7:31 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

My Fiance and I both love chinese food, one of our first dates was at a chinese buffet. When we first started talking about our wedding, we kinda joked about having our reception at the Royal Buffet in Manchester, CT because we love going there...but now we're thinking, that would be so different and cool! Is that a completely stupid idea? Is it do-able? just looking for thoughts and opinions..thanks!

Well, I dunno what this place is like, but in my experience Chinese buffets are not, shall we say....the "classiest" of places....I'd say have it at a banquet hall, have a Chinese theme, and have it catered.

I love it because it means so much to the two of you and is a part of your relationship. Is the buffet nicely decorated? If not, have it catered in to a hall that looks a little more like you'd like it to look for a wedding. This is such a cute idea and it makes me want to get Chinese for dinner!

Having Chinese food was my original idea for our reception. Although we were going to have it catered at a hall. We decided against it due to gastronomical issues. Chinese food isn't very satifying and most people I know get the runs from it since it tends to be greasy. Combine that with alcohol and you may have an issue. Kinda gross, but true.

Ultimately it's your choice, but girl don't think i didn't think the same at a recent visit to the Chinese buffet and saw the extra room off to the side lol! it's cute that it reflects both of you; Depending on the actual buffet maybe having the rehearsal dinner would be a better option; or I agree having it catered..not that guests should matter in the decision process, but I could see many being put off by it, then again I don't know your guests :-)

If you like the buffet go for it! Your wedding should be what you want it to be. Those who love you and want to share in your day will be happy to celebrate with you at a Chinese buffet or at Chucky Cheese. Classiness is in the eye of the beholder.

Just make sure they keep those crab legs rotating on a continuous basis. ; )

I'm having mine at a Chinese restaurant. You can choose your own menu of 10 different dishes. Mostly at Chinese restaurants, the food is served family style. The servers will bring out each dish (enough for 10 people per table) and place it on the Lazy Susan (spinning table on top the the actual table). Per your request, the servers can serve the food onto individual dishes, or the guests can serve themselves, avoiding wasting unwanted food. Some might prefer eating more scallops than shrimps, etc. The servers then would bring out a new dish and take away the old one, in the order you prefer. Here's our tentative menu, just to give you some ideas. Good luck. Smiley smile

    1. Cold cut platter consists of cuttlefish, pork hocks, jelly fish, slice shrimps, and crab-meat balls in the nest with pickled radish and carrot

    2. Deep fried crab claws stuffed with shrimp paste

    3. Crab meat with asparagus soup

    4. Roasted chicken (full body)

    5. Sea treasure in potato nest

    6. (3) Sauteed lobsters with XO sauce on long-live noodles

    7. Braised sliced abalones with Chinese mushrooms sauteed on snow pea tips

    8. Baked fillet of codfish

    9. Fortune seafood fried rice

    10. Special fresh fruit platter

    11. Wedding cake and champagne

Oops- I just realized that I'm using my fiance's account to post. =P

I think that is a great idea if it has meaning to the 2 of you! I'm sure you'll get some people who say "You want to have it where?" but you'll get that with pretty much any decision you make from at least one person you know. SO... I say go for it if it makes you happy!

Another thing you might want to consider is how much dancing you'd want to have at your reception. After Chinese buffet all I usually want to do is lie on the floor...

I'd go to that wedding! You could even serve wacky Chinese restaurant cocktails - some of the places in DC's Chinatown have flames/umbrellas/etc.

I say go for it! I had mine at a steak restaurant Smiley smile It wasn't the classiest of places, but it wasn't bad and our food was delicious. Fortune cookies could be your "favors."
