You can do without either. Neither are necessary. It's all based on your preference and if you want a planner/DOC.

If you're going to have one for sure hire a DOC. Even this far out from our wedding our DOC has been so helpful to us in getting things arranged and ready for our wedding. They will do all set up and tear down on wedding day/weekend and oversee all the moving parts to ensure FH and myself do not have any additional items to fret over. Highly recommend getting one if you can!

We hired a Day of Coordinator and I would do it again if I had to! She made sure everything looked gorgeous and took care of any problems without me, H or my family having tift a finger on the day of (which is exactly what we wanted!!)

A day of is much more crucial than a planner. You do NOT want to be worried about this detail or that the day of the wedding- trust me!

With all the books, websites, apps and computer programs you can
be your own, successfull, wedding planner!
Hell, I took a course and got certified and let me tell ya, my control issues
in handing my BIG DAY off to some random person for the eholetjing
would make me anxious and panicky af! The day of is a necessary evil in my mind.

You can get away with not having one depending on the size and scope of your wedding. We hired an amazing photographer team and an awesome dj who kept us on time and things running smoothly the whole time. Our venue is also known for doing weddings and had worked with all of our vendors before so we had confidence that everything would be fine. And it was!

A wedding planner is definitely not necessary (although I could see the utility if you are doing a destination wedding). A DOC can be very useful. Our venue was a country club that hosts many weddings and has onsite catering and an event coordinator. We did not hire anyone separate as she essentially filled the role of DOC. If your venue has a coordinator like that, it may save you an extra expense (although it's rolled into the cost of the venue).

Neither is required. However, having both myself, I will say having a DOC was a life saver. They keep your entire day flowing smoothly and everything running on time. They also communicate with all of your vendors to make sure they are all where they need to be doing what they need to do. If you can budget for both, I would. If you can only budget for one or the other, I would get a DOC.

I think a DOC is a must have, a planner is a nice to have.

We ended up with a planner because it was part of a nice DJ package, but I would have been fine without. I already researched vendors, am keeping track of my own budget, and know how to review contracts. We haven't used her for any vendor meetings yet so maybe I'll end up changing my mind.
