I think if you can afford one in your budget, but there are so many resources out there to help organize the planning process if you don't have the money for one. I have heard of some planners being able to save couples $$ too..or you could also look into a month of/day of coordinator

I didn't have a wedding planner, nor do I know anyone who has. My venue comes with an event coordinator so I work with her, but otherwise we've done everything on our own just fine.

While you may not necessarily need a wedding planner, I would recommend a month of or day of coordinator. We have a month of coordinator that will be a huge help in the few weeks leading up to our big day and will also be there to help things run smoothly the day of

A day of coordinator would be very helpful if your venue does not have an event planner. They just have the experience to make sure it's all organized (like timelines) and people are where they need to be (wedding party or vendors for that reason) when they need to be. And also handle all the problems that might come up as well as your tips or final payments to vendors so you can have a completely stress free day and are able to relax and just celebrate.
So do you have to? No of course not. Is it helpful on day of to keep everything smooth and you stress free? Yes.

I had all my plans together, but the week before the wedding turned into Hell Week! Everything that could go wrong- wedding and non-wedding related- did go wrong. I would have given up had I not had an amazing coordinator to pass everything off to. She helped me keep our wedding under budget and all vendors used her as a contact that week instead of me!!!

I dont have a planner either. Honestly I feel like having one would have gotten in my way. I like making my own decisions and being in control of them. But if you can afford it and feel like you'd need the help, I'd say go for it. But I do think it's doable on your own.

Have you decided if you're going to hire a wedding planner or will you plan your wedding yourself?
