wedding planner or Not?

Yvretgm, on November 29, 2025 at 11:43 AM Posted in Planning 0 3
Hi everyone!

Newly engaged here + starting to plan my destination wedding in TULUM MX 🤍
I know that planning a wedding in the USA is different and more complex than in MX in several aspects.
While scrolling IG, I came across a wedding planner based out of TULUM who’s been in the wedding industry for 19 + years. I have a specific venue in mind and asked her what her thoughts were about that venue. She told me she used to manage it prior to becoming a wedding planner! We met via video chat and she seems to be a perfect fit for my wedding vision.
1. Should I hire a wedding planner?
2. Is it worth it or a waste of money?
3. Some venues have packages that include a “wedding coordinator” is that the same thing as a wedding planner?
If you had a destination wedding and you hired a wedding planner or did not hire one, I want to know the pros, the cons and everything in between. What would you do different?

A wedding coordinator likely just handles details related to the venue preparation (chairs, tables) and their vendors.

I can't help from experience buy you have to know the general management skills of the planner and what that person will be responsible for. It helps to find independent reviews. A high-end reputable planner could handle the venue and style of the wedding. Decide what level you want.

Maybe others will share some better advice.

Depends on how big and how many people and how much tome you have. I think the worst part of planning the wedding is negotiating with the vendors. Maybe use a planner for that. But all the other stuff is fun. Choosing the centerpieces and the favors. Choosing a venue is exciting. Make a list of the things you can do yourself and if you have a lot of support and help you can use that support to have others help you locate and price vendors either through recommendations or having each person research different vendors. Give some one photography, give some one the dj or band. You'll feel so accomplished if you plan it.

Rather than relying on friends for free wedding planning labor, I strongly suggest using your partner. Only the people getting married are responsible for their own wedding, plus they're co-hosts and life partners. Anyone else will dissuade you from what you truly want in music and photo memories. Or OP can pay a Tulum planner for that work because for anyone, including besties, time is money.
