Wedding Photography

My fiance and I are getting married in Buffalo and he thinks that we should look on craigslist for a photographer (he thinks ANYONE w/ an expensive camera is a photographerSmiley ups )...We talked to our friends who just got married in June and they paid around $3000 (in DC) for the full day, that's too much in both our opinion but I also don't want one of his old high school friends taking the pictures just because he has a nice camera.

So how much is everyone paying for their wedding photographer and be honest, what do you think of looking on Craigslist for one lol?

I've never heard of real photographers advertising on Craigslist. I really can't remember the last time I used Craigslist. I'd look at actual vendor sites like Wedding Wire, The Knot, Yelp, Thumbtack, etc. Maybe just get the photographer for 2 hours or so instead, and don't include an engagement shoot? That should make it more affordable.

We are paying $1850 for our photographer. This includes a 2nd shooter all day (photographers husband), drone pictures, a travel fee and release of the pictures after along with editing and an USB drive or drives. We also have to provide meals for them but to us that's not a big deal. You can also look on Thumbtrack for photographers.

I agree. I, of course, have a problem with looking on Craigslist for a professional anything and it truly amazed me to hear him say we should start there lol. I give him the benefit of the doubt because the last thing we got on craigslist was our 6lb Maltese-Poodle mix. I just think he is concerned about the price and doesn't really understand the value of having good wedding photos. I've already agreed to use a family member for our engagement photos despite me against the idea but we'll see how that turns out. I don't think I can settle for the same when it comes to the wedding day.

We are booking our photographer who costs about $100 per hour. So we r paying $800 for her. We were referred to her through a friend. An option could be to maybe use a student that is in college that could possibly use your wedding as part of their portfolio!

I used thumbtack and found a photographer for $150hr min 5 hours. He’s a beginner but I looked at his Instagram and liked his style and the wedding photos he’s taken so far. Bonus is he’s already shot a wedding at my venue and knows good spots to take good shots at. Try thumbtack for your area.

This is one area that I always encourage people to spend the money on. At the end of the day, your photographs will be the only tangible thing (besides your new spouse!) to remember your wedding day by. I believe you truly get what you pay for, and using someone with less experience (usually why they charge less) may mean that you're going to miss out on important moments or end up with photographs that you really don't love. I personally am spending a sizable chunk of money on a photographer, but I know you can find some really quality people in the $2-3k range. Check out the vendor tab here on WW or even see if your area has a regional wedding page for vendors (there's a very large one here in Southern California that I've turned to when I couldn't find what I was looking for here on WW).

Honestly, photographers costs. I know people think that it’s just pictures but there’s so much that goes into photography including, experience, equipment and time. I would suggest stretching the budget to make it fit. Wedding Bug offers affordable photographers. The only concern is that they don’t tell you your photographer until two or three weeks before the wedding. However, given your concerns, I’d still check them out.

I found my photographer either through this site or the knot. They had a feature to put your price range. I found the people who were in my price range and started stalking their work on Instagram or their websites. Then just reached out to them. I told them my budget and one was willing to work with me. I actually ended up extending the amount of hours with her because truly the pictures are the physical part of your wedding to help you remember that night! So I feel like a good photographer is worth it. Maybe there are some other areas you can cut cost on the photographer?

I would honestly stay away from Craigslist! We're paying about $2100 for a photo/video package. I would highly recommend either Bark or Thumbtack to look for photographers. We just hired out photographer for our engagement photos from Thumbtack.

$850 (not her main business but it's her side business and she had a portfolio). Stayed with us for almost 8 hours.

Our photographer is Rochester based. We paid upwards of 3k for unlimited hours and photos, ended up being around 8 hours and 1200 photos for two shooters. I'm sure for less she would charge appropriately. In any case she might also refer you to others that might be local or in her network.

2800 for engagement, bridal, day of and after shoot with bride and groom back in wedding clothes plus we pay for each photo we want to buy. We paid for someone who has one of the best reputations and does terrific work. At the end, all you will have left are pictures. Look on here in the photographer category listed and pair with someone who fits your style and budget.

We found our photographer on Instagram. I followed the accounts of some photographers I liked and eventually reached out to one. She didn’t do weddings but she referred us to our now photographer, she’s fantastic! Maybe even look into finding a photographer in the larger general area? (100 or so miles?) because we wouldn’t have found our photographer if we didn’t. She’s affordable and fantastic even with her travel fee it’s more affordable for us than other photographers were.

We're paying $1300 for wedding, $300 for engagement photos. He's really good and located in Bel air if you want to check him out. Timeless impressions. We take our engagement photos this weekend. As a photographer myself, anything under $1000 in MD isn't very good. Either the photos aren't sharp or the lighting and angles could be better. They aren't awful, just not great. I've done 2 weddings and they're a lot of work. Post production takes hours too. Don't skimp on a photographer or try to find someone who's organized and great at regular photos and looking to try weddings. That might work well.

$2400 for a main photographer with a second shooter for about 8 hours of coverage. This price also includes an engagement shoot.

My FH and I are on a budget, but photography is one area that I didn't want to compromise on.

One thing that helped him be a little more comfortable with the price point was that I reminded him that we don't take a lot of pictures of ourselves (we always take photos of the stuff we're looking at!). Our selfies are also super awkward because he's a foot taller than me lol. So I told him this was our chance to have nice, professional photos of us looking our best for the rest of our lives, and he was sold!
