Wedding Insurance - worth it?

AlmostMrsJ, on October 24, 2013 at 10:33 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

First, I'll say sorry for being 'that person' who doesn't search for the topic throughout the forum before posting a new thread. I'm still not really sure exactly how to do that ...

Anyway -I'm curious about wedding insurance. FH and I are marrying on 5/24/14. We've already booked almost all of our vendors but still haven't purchased insurance. It's an outdoor wedding in central VA. It's comforting to know that most plans include extreme weather (hurricanes, etc), if a vendor doesn't show up or goes out of business, etc. Does this same type of insurance also cover personal liability in case someone were to be injured at our site (which is private property) and attempt to sue us, or is that a different insurance? Not that i expect that, just trying to think outside the box. I've done some research but i feel the wedding insurance website just seem kind of "schemey" so i'm not sure which ones to trust.

Thanks!

Great question (seeming that I haven't researched it at all). My site requires insurance and I haven't found any yet!!

The ones I've seen will let you choose cancellation only, liability only, or combination, so I guess to answer your question, it will include personal liability if you want it to. For an "average" cost wedding, combo insurance will probably cost about $400.

We are planning to get it for two reasons:

    1) our venue contract requires that we pay the entire estimated cost (about $12K) in the event that we cancel. Obviously we don't expect to cancel, but being stuck with a $12000 bill if we can't have the wedding for whatever reason is not an option. So, for us, cancellation insurance is a priority.

    2) our DJ contract stipulates that we will cover damages caused by them/their equipment (as long as the dj isn't obviously negligent), so, since we are basically absorbing their liability (say, if their equipment overloads the buildings electric and catches the venue on fire), we want to have some security there, too.

I'm looking at WedSafe for ours. Although, I will admit I keep going back and forth as this whole territory is a bit unfamiliar for me.

I really haven't thought all THAT much about it.

I probably should at least take a better look at it.

    Yeah? When/where rusticbride?

I also found wedsafe through a search and was checking into them. I'm now waiting to hear back from my renters insurance company to see if any liability stuff is covered there before diving more into the liability and cancellation wedding insurance, so I know what we actually still need.
