Wedding in August.. need advice

Carolina, on June 27, 2020 at 11:27 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 10
My wedding will be on August the 1st... it is coming up pretty fast. I couldn’t cancel our wedding venue because they do “no refunds even if it is acts of God” type of thing 😫 like who knew this would happen????? Why can’t venues just refund our money back, or at least give us half of it back?? Anyways I talked to the venue & I’m only allowed 38 people to attend my reception 😕 after we paid $4k ! Just wanted to vent. Any advice is welcomed

Carolina, I’m so sorry to hear this for you, but as a fellow COVID bride, not all hope is lost!! A few initial thoughts off the top of my head: could you still use the date and venue for a bridal shower and then chose a postponed wedding date? Not sure of your state regulations, but if allowed, would the venue be willing to provide a tent outdoors to increase square footage? Would they be allowed to place outdoor tables 6 ft apart without a tent? Hope this helps!!! My heart goes out to you!! ❤️

Will they allow you to postpone?

Im not sure what kind of venue you have. Mine is a hotel and they told us that right now they can to operate events at 50% of capacity to allow more distancing between the guests. However they are offering us to move to the bigger salons so the 50% capacity can end up being a higher number. They are also working on developing outdoor reception options with a tent. Maybe this is a possibility for you guys depending on your venue?

Every venue/vendor seems to be handling this differently, I’m sorry yours is not being helpful. Our photographer doesn’t give any refunds either, but he does allow postponing/rescheduling as long as he’s available for the new date- would that be an option for you? I know some people are being charged fees for changing dates and/or new rates of moving to 2021, but that’s better than losing all your money and getting nothing. I hope you can figure out a solution! Good luck!

    Oh, no, I'm so sorry!

Will they not let you postpone? If they can't provide the service you contracted for, that seems to be something to take to a lawyer...

So is that 4K your deposit? Because if that’s the case, most deposits are non refundable. My venue has a date that we will have to have the final head count by and we will pay for that amount even if fewer guests come, per the contract. Anything over that number we will also have to pay for.
This covid nightmare has made wedding planning less than pleasant and I’m sorry that they are being less than helpful.
Hopefully you can come up with a solution like pp have said.

I’m confused about the 4K, is that your deposit? Would it even cost 4K to host and feed 38 guests???

I would have a lawyer to look over the contract. $4000 for 38 seems unreasonable. They need to at least give a big discount.

Did you ask about rescheduling? We were initially canceled the week of our wedding in March and we just rescheduled our November date to 2021. W didn’t get any money back if we canceled.

I would ask about rescheduling and what they'll do to work with you to make the 4k worth it if they won't refund any of it. What will they add to make it actually cost 4k to host 38 people?
