Wedding hotel block

Andrea, on September 10, 2019 at 2:09 PM Posted in Planning 1 29
What perks did you get from the hotel you set your wedding block up with? I’m guaranteeing them at least 25 rooms for definitely the night of my wedding (a Saturday) and a good number of rooms for the night before. They are giving me $99 off my suite (which was already included as a perk in my wedding venue package) 🙄 that seems a little ridiculous to give them all this business and get really nothing in return. We live in the Chicago suburbs, there are a million hotels! Did you guys look around for a deal or is this common?

Typically the perk is that your guests receive a (minimally) discounted rate and are guaranteed rooms.

We blocked two hotels in Denver. One gave us a free room if we booked 10 rooms in the block (we ended up not booking any in our cheaper block). The other (main block) gave us a free room each night we booked 15+ rooms. We booked 23 rooms Thursday night, 35 rooms Friday night, and 46 rooms Saturday night. I upgraded us to a suite, so we paid the difference (so a $120 discount). They handed out gift bags to our guests as well that we made at home. They kept the bar open until 2 AM after our wedding (typically closed at 11 PM).

There were no perks from either of our 2 hotels.

Well, I mean they guaranteed a rate, handed out our welcome bags, and put up a welcome sign in the lobby with our shuttle schedule. But, we didn’t personally get any sort of kick backs.

That’s exactly what I’m looking for! I’ve emailed about keeping the bar and lobby open too, and i definitely think if i can provide you with that many rooms, when I have option on options for my guests to stay, you should provide me with something as well. Thanks! I’ll keep looking!

We used Marriott for ours, overall it was a good experience. We listed 4 other hotels too, just in case guests wanted other options, but we only blocked two.

We did get a good rate for our guests, and I’m assuming they’ll hand out the welcome bags, that’s pretty standard. Hmm, maybe I’m wrong, this is the only “vendor” that hasn’t been an easy decision

Thanks for your advice. I’m talking to a Hilton and a Hyatt now, both less than a mile from our venue.

That just seems so surprising to me when we are giving them a great deal of business on a random weekend, not even peak wedding season and there wouldn’t be an incentive to us. I could see in a smaller city with fewer hotel options but the Chicago suburbs? Maybe I need to shop around or maybe I’m just wrong haha

We got a guarantee room block (which is good as the hotel is booked that weekend). Our guests also got a preferred rate of $139 per night, and we are able to use their bar & shuttles to the hotel.
The only “perk” that we will receive is that we will get 3x the Marriott points for all the guests who booked on our room block (the guests will receive their standard points).

We went with kimpton. They have a fee to hand out welcome bags, but have perks that include that for free if you book 60% of your block and allow you to upgrade two rooms to a park view. Then at 70% we get the suite for the group rate. Then at 80% we get the suite free the wedding night and at the group rate the night before. The group rate also allows for 72 hours prior to cancellation with no fee and no deposit required.

The block we inquired with actually had the rate at $40 MORE expensive and they justified this by saying it is because it comes with breakfast and room is refundable. Needless to say, I didn't go with a block there.

If we book 10 room nights, are suite is market rate for both nights. If we book 20 room nights, one night is free. If we book 40 room nights, both nights are free.

UPDATE! I was able to get 2 complimentary nights in the suite at the Hyatt with my hotel room block! So it is worth it to look around and to ask what they can do for you. Great rate for my guests, free shuttle, and a $450 room for free for two nights. 🎉🎉

A Marriott in the philly area provided our friends who were getting married with a discounted suite and a free shuttle service to the venue so we didn’t have to drive! It was actually so great that they got the shuttle that we’re going to try to do the same thing for our wedding.

Our room is complimentary on our wedding night and the room block of 15 rooks is also complimentary and if it doesn't book they just realease it back into their inventory. I thought that was pretty great.
