Wedding guests dress code

Jazmin, on October 4, 2019 at 5:07 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 31

There are different dress codes for a wedding, theknot.com has the following categories:

White tie

Black tie

Formal

Cocktail

Beach formal

Semi-formal

Casual

Sometimes brides can be very creative with their dress code demands, some may ask all the guests to dress in white, some others may ask the guests to dress according to a certain era (i.e. 1920's). In our case, we chose the dress code Beach Formal and asked the guests not to wear white, a couple of guys wore a white shirt, but besides that everybody was properly dressed.

What dress code did you chose and did you have any special demands?

I chose semi formal. I did ask no white and try to avoid pink as not to clash with bridesmaids. We had the stragglers who came in tshirts and jeans -_-

Oh boy, I'm so sorry about that.

I haven't given much thought to the dress code. I guess because everything is on the beach and I want our guests to be comfortable. But I like the "beach formal" idea that you came up with. Maybe I'll suggest that if anyone asks.

We aren’t dictating a dress code. We trust that our guests can pick their own attire based on our venue and invitations.

I think what frustrated me more was that I know those people had nicer clothes ya know? Like I've seen my coworker in a dress shirt and slacks before or my friend in a dress. So it's a bit frustrating they couldn't have worn those things. They stood out so much since they were the only people in that type of attire and everyone else was so nicely dressed

I hope the majority of our guests come in jeans or shorts. Extremely casual

No dress code. I wanted to make a note on our website to make sure everyone planned beach appropriate footwear so I said something like “please note this is a backyard/beach event — while we welcome you to dress as formally as you would like, it’s probably best to leave the stilettos at home for this one!” — we had a couple guys ask specific questions and we basically answered by describing H’s outfit to them. Like a “wear whatever but the groom
is wearing linen dress pants and a vest” which was enough to signify that a full suit was not necessary.

We're doing semi-formal, haven't chosen anything regarding colors since I haven't picked bridesmaids dresses and colors.

Love how colorful your guests are! “Beach formal” looks gorgeous in your group photos.

For our DW, because we didn’t want to spoil the pirate reception but didn’t want guests looking too formal, we just asked guests to dress California wedding casual for a winery wedding. Guests asked for tips for so we said flowy dresses for ladies, no crazy patterns. Suits no ties for guys.

For our 1960’s reception we asked for swanky era attire. Guests looked amazing! Some ladies wore family pearls or vintage cocktail dresses. Men looked dashing in classic tuxes and some wore fedoras.

We had a semi formal dress code and it turned out fine. I specifically had to tell my grandma that she couldn’t show up in shorts and a T-shirt 🙄

We put formal down as our dress code versus semi formal just because we didn't want anyone showing up in jeans.

I noted Beach Casual on my website but didn’t really go into details, left it up to interpretation. My mom is still looking for a halfway dressy dress, my uncle interpreted it as shorts & Hawaiian shirt. Who knows how other people will interpret it.

I'm going with semi formal. I haven't specified colors yet, but I kind of want to. I think the pictures would turn out fabulous if I requested all black/grey from men, and reds/blacks from women. But I haven't decided yet. Smiley smile

Our dress code was “black tie optional” and I was kinda surprised that a few of the men wore khakis and no ties.

I'm not having a dress code! It's a church wedding so it's a great guideline of how to dress, but of course there's still going to be people who show up in jeans. That's on them, not me Smiley laugh

Sounds like they took the "optional" part of the request very seriously!

Yes, I liked giving some guidance because I had guests from different countries and beach attire can vary from each culture.
