There are different dress codes for a wedding, theknot.com has the following categories:

White tie

Black tie

Formal

Cocktail

Beach formal

Semi-formal

Casual

Sometimes brides can be very creative with their dress code demands, some may ask all the guests to dress in white, some others may ask the guests to dress according to a certain era (i.e. 1920's). In our case, we chose the dress code Beach Formal and asked the guests not to wear white, a couple of guys wore a white shirt, but besides that everybody was properly dressed.

What dress code did you chose and did you have any special demands?

Yeah, I imagine. I'm so sorry you had to experience that. Some guests just don't care about complying with something as simple as the dress code. I'm telling you, I didn't understand why 4 people decided to wear white shirts after I said no white on the invitation.

Yeah, it makes sense. Dress codes are such a cultural thing. In the DR nobody will ever go to a wedding wearing jeans unless they're asked to, but I've noticed people in the US tend to be less formal.
