Wedding gift checks

DonnaBelle, on February 3, 2013 at 9:59 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

I am wondering what's the best way to handle checks that are given to us as gifts on our wedding day. We are leaving for our honeymoon the morning after the wedding and will be gone for about 10 days. Personally, I hate it when people don't deposit my checks quickly. Do you think most poeple who give you checks will expect for it to be about a couple of weeks before it can be deposited? Here are a couple of other ideas I'm pondering:

1. Deposit checks via iPhone app while waiting at the airport.

2. Get deposit slips from the bank and ask someone (parents perhaps) to deposit the checks the week after the wedding.

What do you guys think?

We put ours in the atm as we were leaving town for HM that night. I don't think people would mind if it took 10 days considering the situation with wedding and HM.

We only had about 5 checks and the rest was cash.

If you don't need the money for your honeymoon, I'm sure it will be okay to deposit the checks when you return. People know that you are going on a honeymoon after the wedding. They will allow the time.

We will be depositing them all in the ATM on the Monday after our Saturday wedding.

I work at a bank and I personally would deposit them in the ATM if you can't make it to the bank or have someone deposit them for you and write deposit only on the back so they can't cash them. Also since you haven't changed your name yet it may be a problem but what we ask our couples to do is sign with there new name and old name. But each bank is different you just have to ask what there polices are!

Also depositing checks through your iPhone some banks have limits....ours is $2500 per day so if you go that route make sure you know the limits good luck!

I plan to stop at the ATM or have my sister go to the bank while we are gone. However, if you don't need the money I definitely think its ok to hold the checks until you get back.

I have been in banking for 8 years and I see this as being the problem with checks, because if they make it out to MR. AND MRS. DOE, you have not changed your name yet, therefore the bank most likely will not accept the checks. So it may have to wait until you get back from the honey moon and get your name changed.

I however work at a bank, so I probably won't have any problems getting our checks in because part of my staff will be at the wedding

We took a few days off after our wedding, and didn't deposit our cheques until about a week after the wedding, didn't seem to bother anyone.

The ones that were made out to Mr and Mrs M., we just deposited them in DH's account, since we didn't have joint accounts and I hadn't changed my name. Didn't have any problems. There was only 1 or 2 that were made out to my maiden name, just put them in my account.

I think you would be fine using your phone app to make the deposits or have someone deposit them on your behalf.

I hadn't even thought about the Mr. and Mrs. Doe checks! Geesh, I hope we don't get a lot of those. Thanks to you all for the advice! :-)

That's good you didn't have a problem Tiffany! Typically that's not the case unless you know someone there that knows you were getting married. Which is sad to say, but true. If Mr. Doe came in with checks to Mr. and Mrs. most banks aren't going to accept them because there is no Mrs. on the account. There are of course exceptions to every rule. and of course, if you deposit them with your phone or at the ATM you may get by with it, but I have seen Wells Fargo (I used to work there) kick items back if they didn't like the way the checks were made out, or if they didn't like the endorsments. and then it takes even longer to get the funds, because they mail you back the paper check and then you have to take it into the bank to deposit it.

I'm so glad you asked this. I hadn't even thought about it. Our bank is open 7 days a week as well. I may go by there the next morning and deposit them so they will be there and if we want, we have some extra spending money on our trip.

My FH and I have a joint account so it really doesn't matter who it gets made out to we love our Chase bank they are super nice. We have had issues with my name being spelled wrong by one letter and they still take the checks.

People know that newlyweds have other things to do (like go on your honeymoon, for one) -- nobody's going to be upset if it takes you a couple of weeks to deposit the checks. (Heck, we waited a month or so -- we waited until we got the marriage license back, then until we had a free day when the bank was open, so we could go together, change our names on our bank accounts and deposit the checks at the same time.)
