Wedding dress

Hi all -

Due to living in Jersey during COVID I have been unable to go dress shopping . My wedding is 5/16 - do I still have enough time?! How long does it take for a dress to come in ?

Yes you have enough time. It can take a few months for a dress to come in and you’ll need some time for alterations too. You still have a year though I wouldn’t worry just yet.

Wait May of next year?? You’re fine. I’ve read and been advised to give it minimum 4 months to come in and 2-3 months for alterations. I ordered my dress for 3/6/21 yesterday. So happy!! Good luck don’t stress.

You could probably wait to order a dress in the fall. I would at least start looking to find out what styles and silhouettes you like best!

Yes, May of next year - I was told that dresses take 8-9 months to come in. Congratulations on finding your dress!

You're totally fine! When I ordered my dress they told me it could take up to 6 months to come in, but it arrived about 2 weeks later.

I wouldn't stress until you're like 9 months out. Unless you're planning on having a custom dress made, I've never heard of a dress taking more than 9 months to arrive (and even that is on the upper end)

Some very limited, expensive, or those with custom details, take a super long time. Most stores push shopping early because it is easier to schedule production, and because the further out from the wedding people order, the more they tend to spend, adding assessories, maybe coming back with rest of party, or family. And almost all clerks ( consultants) get paid commissions. If you look in three places, buy a dress you first liked in shop 1, in shop 2, and buy an additional evening/ honeymoon cruise dress in shop 3 that you first tried in shop 1 >>> That clerk in shop one lost 2 chunks of money for not getting you to buy then, or come back within 2 weeks and make an appointment with her by name. Pressure Sales.
In fact, most will take orders at 6 months, and at 5 months or 4 if enough dresses are in production and warehouses. Two things people do not realize. 1, just because someone tells you buy now or within 2 months, or you won't be able to get this dress, does not mean they are telling the truth. They may know quite well they will have it to sell for several months time, very often. And 2, for big dress lines, provided you order a dress not being discontinued in a few months ( this year's dress with poor sales, or ones sold for 2-4 years, time for a change), or ones made as a 1 shot deal somewhere in china, dress orders are not filled in the order of when you ordered them. Order from Maggie Sottero , oe Jasmine, or some Mon Cheri lines in your 8th month out, you may be told, we won't take orders after the beginning of the 7th month. And they will ship your gown 6 to 8 weeks before your wedding. You wait 6-6.5 months. But do what I did, many do, with short engagements, go in for that same dress at 4.5 months out, and they check with production stock. Most of the time, they want to sell as may gowns as possible. So they take the order, and fill it 6 weeks before the wedding. Which means, I waited 3 months for the dress. They game me the dress produced first, because that still meant they could turn out another for the person who ordered way in advance, who has more time. So write down dress numbers you like, and don't be pressured.
Someone I worked with went nuts when she saw I ordered the dress she "could not get ", later. She went in at 8.5 months, was told she must order by 7 months, Or no dress. She could not afford it. At 6 months she went to a store that carried many lines. She did not ask for the dress, settled for another off the rack. The next week, I went in, asked for and ordered the dress, and got it in 3 months. 6 weeks before my wekking, would still have been 12 weeks before hers. But she had a dress. She lost out because she believed the pressure sales, buy now or else. Some dresses, particularly in a few common sizes, do run out, after production has stopped. But if with all this Covid stuff you end up not able to buy in person til 5-6 months, don't settle without trying the dress lines you "heard" you can't get if you did not order way out. I worked in the industry a while, it helped pay for college. If at 4 months out, there are 500 of a dress in warehouses, that take 6 weeks to actually put together, and they have 600 orders for that dress and size, half of them for 2-5 months after yours, you will get a dress. and they send orders for another to be made by the later deadline. They go by when you need it, and count backwards, not by who ordered first, at big name makers in steady production. Mine was a Maggie Sottero. 2 of my sisters ordered with shirt timelines. One liked 2 Sophia Tolli and one Maggie, right at 4 months, very similar. 1 Tolli and 1 Sottero were still available at 4 months, in at 5 weeks, custom hem, no need for alterations. The other sister could not get a Jim Hjelm, got a Casablanca, again similar dresses, just a different pattern in the lace. Don't let Covid panic and pressure sales push you to purchase what you do not want. Don't accept them telling you you can only try on a dress 3 sizes larger, or 2 too small. Take the time to find a different shop that does carry your size or within 1 size, so not more than 2 inches off. Don't be hurried. Good luck

I think you’ve got plenty of time. You have more time to plan right now than I did from the day I was engaged to my wedding. I got my dress 8 months before the wedding.
