Wedding Dress Sizing Panic (size 4 for a size 0 person)

buffalobride, on February 23, 2016 at 12:58 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 35

Just ordered Mori Lee 2647. I've always been a double zero, but the store ordered a size four. Late night panic ensued because I tried on a Jasmine dress size two that fit perfect and has a smaller sizing chart than Mori Lee. When the store "measured" me tonight before putting the order in, the measuring tape was super loose and saggy. It almost made it seem like they were getting me to order a size up to get some cash on alterations later. I emailed them just now and asked to speak with someone about this and to get measured one more time. Do you think I should go with the size two? I am 5' 7" 107 pounds. My figure and weight have gone unchanged since high school

If you have doubts about the way you were measured then I would try to go back and get re measured. However bridal sizing is different and typically two sizes bigger than your street size. Different bridal designers have different sizing as well, so they may have been going by that designers sizing guide. That said, the salon probably had you sign off on the size when you ordered it right? So you are probably going to be stuck with the size you ordered. Also alterations are based on the amount of work required, not the amount of fabric that needs to be taken in. You could always take your dress to another salon or seamstress for alterations.

I can't speak to your designer, but they had me order my dress two sizes bigger than I normally wear as well. I'm usually a 4, they ordered my dress in an 8. Bridal dress sizing seems to be a whole different world, depending on the designer. I agree with the PP, if you signed off on ordering that size you can't do anything about it. Shop around for alterations at a decent price, it'll be alright!

I agree with the PPs that bridal dress sizes run a lot smaller than normal dress sizes. If they'll let you get remeasured, definitely do that, but I'm guessing the 4 won't be as big on you as you think it will be.

Same as FutureLivi, I'm always the smallest size in any brand, and for wedding dresses I ended up being a 4. I'm 5'2", 102 lb.

Omg the same thing happened to me!!! I'm a size zero and was ordered a size 4. The reason for this is that wedding gowns run very small. My dress shop actually asked me if I wanted to order the smallest size which was a size 2 but advised that because it was such a "right on" fit that I should order the 4. My measurements ended being 31.5 23 34.5 and the size 2 was 31.4 22.5 34.5. So obviously I was really scared ordering a small size with it being that close! With that being said most dresses can comfortably be taken down 2 sizes. If you are truly comfortable ordering a size 2 speak up and do it! I could have, I just didn't want the dress to come and be too tight!

Here's one for ya. I wear a 2 or 4 usually and my dress is a size 10 (I have a large chest and hips but a very small waist). I saw the measurements and I trust my salon. I'd rather pay to get it to fit like a glove than it be too tight. I also had the perk of ordering petite so I know the length will be perfect and save me a bit.

I actually wear a size 0 in pants and my dress is a size 10 it all depends on the brand really but if you aren't comfortable them you need to tell them it's your money

I had the same concern with the first boutique I went to and I was right. The sample size I had on was a 10 and it was swimming on me. The lady said I should order an 8! I was extremely weirded out. I knew sizes in wedding dresses are different but there was no way. I went to another boutique tried on the same dress in a 4 and it was too big.... Moral of the story stick to your gut! Call them and see if you can reorder.

Wedding dress sizing is utter bullshit. I am a 14 in street clothing, but my dress is a (gasp) 20. This sizing craziness seems to be true across styles and brands.

@Greta yes hourglass figure, same here. Wedding dresses run small. I'm a street size 6. The sample dress I tried on was a size 8. My dress was ordered in a wait for it...size 16. My dress was ordered based on my hip measurements. It's pretty normal, you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

They run small like others said, and the size 2 that fit is a sample dress so it has been stretched out. Same boat though, usually a 00-2 but bought a BM dress in an 8.

They will order the size that will fit your biggest proportion (hip, bust etc) knowing they can bring it in easier then out.

    And remember, it's a just a number!!!

MNBride is right. I could have bought an 8 but it would have been tight on my hips so instead we wound up with a 12 or 14 so there was room around the hips to alter it in. unfortunately this also means there is a lot to take in everywhere else but I'd rather order up than have it so tight I can't sit/dance/walk.

Could they be accounting for what you will be wearing underneath and thats why they ordered bigger? I would call or go back for some peace of mind!

I am a street size 6 and the bridal shop took my measurements and told me a range of sizes to pick between. They kept saying how bridal sizes run much smaller than street sizes so I ended up with a size 10. Well the dress is huge (to the point where even the inner corset has to be taken in) and I wish I would have ordered at least one size smaller. My dress is maggie sottero esme. Its going to be expensive to alter Smiley sad

They order based on your largest area. So your chest or hips may be a 4 but your waist a 0. You will get alterations which will fix that. I am 5' 2" 110 lbs and I had a size 8 dress. I had 4 inches taken in on each side by the end.

It's ALWAYS easier to take a dress in than out! I wear an 8 street size and my dress was ordered in a 14. It's too big, and I probably could've gotten away with a 12 no problem, but it helps ease the stress that it'll fit. My seamstress is taking it in roughly one size.

Yeah, I'd be terrified if I had to buy a size four.

Wedding gowns are always at least two sizes bigger than your street size, which makes no sense to me, but it's the way it is. Don't worry.
