Wedding Credit Card?

Emily , on March 31, 2017 at 1:31 PM Posted in Planning 0 44

Have any of you had wedding credit cards? Like for rewards/cash back? We are thinking about doing this. If any of you have, which card did you use?

I don't have one just for the wedding.. I use my BOA travel rewards then pay it off right away. Trying to get as many travel points for our honeymoon as I can.

Chase Freedom. I pay it off completely every month. I usually have about $25 a month in rewards that you can redeem as cash or for gift cards at the stores they offer. It definitely helps. I just redeemed it for a $25 DSW gift card because a pair of my work heels broke.

I got the chase freedom one with 1.5% cash back. I just pay it off at the end of every month.

I would not recommend going into debt for the wedding, but as long as you pay it off monthly and are just using it for cash back, I don't see a problem.

I definitely did this! I used two cards, the first was a TD Bank card which gave me $250 back on $500 and the second was an Amex that gave back $200 on $500 so we spent $650 on $1000 worth of decor/invitations/etc. If you are good with credit cards this is a great way to go.

Promotions are always changing so I would suggest using a site like creditkarma.com or creditsesame.com which makes recommendations based on your personal financial situation and it will provide rewards/cash back information as well. Best of luck!!

ETA: I do agree with other comments, I would not recommend actually going into debt, but it looks like you are just asking about cash back and rewards which is how we approached it. We just paid everything off once we reached the necessary limit to obtain the rewards.

I only have a discover card for rewards, but I'm sure there are better options out there. If you have the money to spend already, and are just using the card to rack up rewards, this is a good thing to do, provided you pay off your bill in full every month. That's what I do with my card - pay it off completely every month so I can get the extra rewards.

Disclaimer: If you don't have the money to pay it off, I wouldn't recommend using credit cards, as you're probably spending more on the wedding than you can afford.

We got one at the suggestion of my dad who is huge on points and rewards. Ended up going with the Capital One Venture Card because it is 0% interest for first 12 months. However, we are turning around and paying off the balance every month. I'm paranoid about racking up credit card debt and spending money I don't have. One of my coworkers paid for their whole wedding on a credit card and it took them SEVEN YEARS to pay off!!!

I didn't get it just for the wedding, but I have a quicksilver cash back card. It's only worth it if you pay it off every month. Otherwise the interest outweighs the cash back.

FH just got a a fancy Delta Airlines credit card that so he can use the airport lounges and earn a bunch of extra frequent flyer miles. (He travels a lot for work.) We have been using that for everything we can because you get even more bonus miles if you hit certain spending thresholds.

Definitely don't go into debt over a wedding, but if you aren't getting points/miles/cash back through wise use of credit cards then you are leaving money on the table. At minimum you should be getting 1-2% cash back.

IDK about one JUST for the wedding, but we have used credit cards for the rewards and then paid the balance off in full right away. Definitely don't use a credit card to rack up debt.

Also, some of our vendors we paid in cash so we wouldn't have to pay tax, which ended up being cheaper than the rewards on our credit cards so it's been a case by case basis.

We have a card we pay off right away. I wouldn't recommend doing it unless you know you can pay what you put on it.

We have the Southwest card, since we only fly Southwest, and accumulate miles to visit our families. We had it before the wedding though, I don't know if I would open one just for that.

We have a Citi double cash. You get 2% in cash back. We put everything for the wedding on the card but my husband paid it all off right away just to earn the rewards.

We put things on FH Amex cause it gets Hilton Hhonors points.

The only way we put something on the card is if we know it can be paid in full when the bill comes in.

We're using our normal credit cards for wedding purchases so we earn points. Of course everything gets paid off on time and in full.

We are going to get a travel points credit card to use for the wedding ( we have the money in savings anyway but we figured it's a great way to get free miles for our honeymoon! Plus FH lives in CA and I'm in NY for school so we fly back and forth a lot) haven't decided which one To go with yet

For the disciplined and well budgeted, they can be a great idea if you're interested in the reward factor. However, if you're barely squeaking by with your budget, stay away from them. It is far too tempting to use them for things you can't really afford while telling yourselves you'll pay it back with wedding gifts.

We're also using our Southwest card, but we had it before the wedding and really just turn around and pay it off as soon as we make a purchase. I'd be so scared to have a card just for the wedding. I want to pay cash for as much as possible!

It's not JUST for the wedding, but I have the Chase Freedom Unlimited which offers 1.5% cash back on all purchases. I use this instead of my debit card, and I pay it off every month.

Also use the Chase Freedom- we got an extra $150 for opening the card, and 1.5% back.
