We spent $550 on our cake not including the flowers on it and it fed 90-110 guests. My cousin spent $1500, but her guest count was much larger 300 guests.

Most bakers charge anywhere from $2-7 per slice (half the size of a birthday cake slice) and some can get as expensive at $20/slice. Grocery stores are on the lower price end and just as delicious. Price depends largely on where you are located and intricacy of the design (fondant, hand painted vs simple buttercream with flowers).

So where I live the average wedding cake is $10-$15 a slice. Because of that we opted for a dessert table over a wedding cake because it would’ve been over 2 grand for a cake.

Our wedding cake is a little over $400, and feeds 50 people. My brother and sister-in-law spent almost $900 on their cake that fed 150

We live in a relatively high cost area and most bakers daughter talked with were in the $7-10+ a slice range. That was more than she wanted to spend so she kept looking. She found a small local cupcake bakery that also does cakes. They did a beautiful traditional three tier cake with a custom-mixed buttercream frosting (daughter is super picky about textures and couldn't do anything too "airy" as she finds lots of frostings too "slimy"...) for $3.75 a slice. With tax, delivery, and the driver's tip, cake for 100 guests was under $450, and it was delicious. Comparison shopping pays off! Smiley winking

Oh my goodness!! I guess that makes sense. I've been finding some cakes around the $600-$700 mark but I was just curious.

I like that price but not sure if we'd find something for that price. I'm definitely going to search though. I've been seeing mostly the $600 range as well.

We have about 140 or so on our guest list. I mean I guess you gotta do what you gotta do to get what you want/need. I guess the prices I've been seeing aren't as bad as I thought.

Seek out small bakeries and cupcake shops, they tended to be lower than more traditional wedding cake bakeries. Daughter did a LOT of her vendor shopping on Wedding Wire and The Knot, and also Yelp. When she looked at reviews, she specifically looked for those that mentioned lower-costs or vendors that were willing to work within a budget. Overall, she saved a lot by comparison shopping that way, and ultimately loved all of her vendors. (Daughter found that almost everyone on her venues' "preferred providers list" was on the more expensive end of the continuum. Also, look at the websites for venues that sell themselves as "all inclusive," then read their info to see who they use for their cakes -- those bakeries are likely to have lower-priced options that they supply to those all inclusive venues. Good luck!

Also, I just looked at your profile and it looks like you're in the Vegas area. Be sure you look in the suburbs and not just in Las Vegas proper; daughter found the cupcake shop in our smaller suburban city to be much less expensive than those in the bigger cities in the northern part of the county -- part of it is what the market will bear. So many people go to the strip for destination weddings, I'd expect those bakeries to be more expensive because lots of their customers won't bother to comparison shop and/or don't want to have a cake delivered from 10 miles away -- they'll just pay whatever they have to. But, you may be able to work with less obvious options. Good luck!

I hear ya. We have a dessert table as well but we'd still like a cake. What kind of cupcakes are you going to have??
