Wedding cake servings vs. guest number

Gabriele , on May 15, 2013 at 12:04 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

Ladies - what would you do?

We have 89 confirmed guests, including us. There are 6 children (4 around age two and 2 six years old).

Our current wedding cake has 101 servings. To go one size smaller would be 79 servings. I do not want to save the first tier or have any leftover cake.

We will be serving heavier appetizers at the cocktail hour from 3:00 to 4:00. Buffet dinner will be served around 4:30. We also have a little bit of candy - M&M's and York peppermint patties with coffee. Later that night we will serve crackers and cheese and fruit.

Would you go 101 servings or 79 servings? Not a budget issue, just don't want to waste food.

I'd probably go 101. Wedding cake servings are much smaller than "celebration" cake servings, and so you really won't be able to get any more servings out of a 79 serving cake.

I always say bigger just in case.

You should be fine with 101. We had cupcakes and we ordered 150 - had 135 people there and came home with 6 cupcakes. Some people ate multiples, some ate none. You do have to figure that some people will not eat dessert at all. I almost never do.

You don't want leftovers? We're taking our leftovers home, and if there are pieces left from below the top tier, we'll pack them in our carry-ons so we have a snack on the plane! I can honestly say that I don't know anyone who has ever complained about having to eat leftover cake for a couple days.

We went from 150 to 175. We realized that even though we only anticipate 150 we would not have ANYTHING left over, and one incorrect cut could mean someone doesn't get cake. I'm especially glad we did this since our guest list has grown to 169.

I would go bigger so you can keep the top tier.

I would say it depends how you are serving it... If it is being served to each table I would go bigger, to make sure everyone gets a slice but if it's self serve or servers are just walking around with trays many people won't take a serving so you could safely go smaller.
