I get married aug 20, and my question is I want to save money and make my own wedding cake. (I know how to bake but I’ve never made butter cream of anything fancy) so do I have enough time to learn before my big day? Or just spend the 500$

It sort of depends if you have a wedding coordinator or planner. Other things may come into play too. Many brides have lots of details to resolve in the last few weeks before the wedding. If all other issues of preparation were handled and no surprises came up, the baking of a cake would be possible. Check some of the post about last minute details that people have to handle. Then decide whether it seems likely that you schedule will be light in the week preceding the wedding.

Maybe a friend could learn the baking. Also, the process for doing the tiers might be another issue -- this and other details of having the type of cake display you want.

So I do bake and it absolutely wouldn't have been worth it (to me personally) to take on the stress and effort of baking, decorating, storing, and delivering my own wedding cake. There's so much going on the days leading up and day of you won't want to think about it.

Additionally, you'd have to practice and ingredients and the matierials cost money and time. So really you'd only be saving $100-250 at the end of the day.

Also, a lot of venues won't let you bring in food that is homemade and served to guests. So you'd have to ask your venue anyway to see if this is even an option for you.

A few things come in to play here the biggest question is how big of a cake are we talking? If its a small 2 -3 layered (not tiered) cake or a sheet cake you can probably do it. Buttercream is not hard to make but you definitely should start practicing now. Making a large tiered cake for your wedding could be very stressful. I love to bake and have made all sorts of cakes for different events but know it would be too much for me to make my own wedding cake. As many people on here can attest the last week of wedding planning can be stressful for a whole slew of reasons adding a cake to your to do list especially if it is a large cakes could be a lot. The other thing you need to think about if making it yourself is storing it and transporting it. If its a cake on a small scale and you will have some help if needed it's probably doable. But it is important to keep in mind DIY projects while awesome often take up more time and money then we think they will. Even if you don't make your own wedding cake definitely learn to make buttercream its a nice skill to have in your baking tool belt Smiley smile . Best of luck to you!!Smiley heart

For me, attempting this would be way too anxiety provoking. Making a wedding cake is a ton of work. I would spend the money and breathe a sigh of relief

Depends on where you live that you can find that price but does that include the taxes in that price also now it also some bakery can go by number of ppl and tiers that you want. Now this may seem surprising that some supermarket cakes taste good some time even better. So that has to be considered as well

A friend got the task of delivering a wedding cake made by the daughter for another person's wedding, as a gift. The cake delivery part of a several-tiered cake seems like a challenge. Oh. And the picture of me in the kitchen on the original post was used with my permission.

Buttercream is easy to make in my opinion! How many guests are you going to have at your wedding?
