Hey Everyone,

My fiance recently proposed to me in July of this year and we plan to get married September 2021.

A lot of people are saying that is a long time but we want to make sure we have money to budget everything!

Opinions? I'm thinking about possibly switching it to next year.

Do whatever you are able to afford. If it takes until 2021 to be able to afford it based on who is paying for what, then do that. If you are able to make 2020 work money wise then great, but you'll also have to consider venues/vendors already booking up for 2020 if you decide to move it up a year!

If waiting until 2021 means that you can have the wedding that you want without going into debt, do it. Don't let anyone persuade you into doing something you don't want/can't afford. We had 22 months between proposal and wedding. Of course we wish we could get married sooner, but this is what worked for us and we have no regrets.

Long engagements are perfect for paying things off slowly so you can have the wedding you want. For some couples they want to be married right away, others have no problem living life as engaged for some time. It should be up to you and your FS how long your engagement is.

My biggest thing was not rushing into it so I could plan accordingly and have the wedding my fiance and I want! I want to look into every detail that will make our day perfect. I would love to have it next year but again, I don't want to rush into it.

Vendors was also a big thing, I figured next year was probably booked up for a lot of vendors already.

    Thanks for the advice!

I absolutely understand that! Planning a wedding is a lot of work and the more time the better!

You definitely have enough time to plan a wedding for next year if that's what you'd rather do, but if your budget needs that extra year to have the wedding you want then you should wait until 2021. Congratulations on your engagement!!

We got engaged last November and were planning to get married in 2021. But about a month ago we totally changed our minds and realized we didn’t want to wait! So we are planning for fall 2020 now, and we’re so excited!

Do what’s best for you and FH. We were engaged in January of this year, and our date isn’t until 8/22/2020. Not only did we manage to save for it, but it helped with stress. We spent an entire 8 months doing research, budgeting, and viewing venues. It was a great decision.

We got engaged in July of 2017 and didn't get married until this September. There was a lot of down time the first year, but it was definitely worth it to save up the money. There's no way we would have been able to pull it together in time for last year.

I'm a big fan of the long engagement. FH proposed in June 2018 and we will get married November 2020- almost a 29 month engagement. We mostly did it so that he would be out of grad school at the time. But it's been so nice to have the time to save up money, we're almost to our goal savings! It would have been nice to get married sooner, but I loved just being able to enjoy being engaged for a bit and taking planning one step at a time.

I think it's totally fine to wait that long. We got engaged December 2017, married July 2019. So 19 months total for planning. It was long, but we had so much less stress & were able to focus on other things. During those 19 months, my husband graduated from his master's program & started working, we bought a house, started renovating it, etc. We just had way more time!

Longer engagement is perfect way to save money and to not rush. You can enjoy yourselves and slowly plan. I got engaged October 2018 and our wedding is September 2020. We knew we wanted to move in 2019 (discussed before engagement) and knew we couldn't move cross-country and have a wedding. It was a great decision, especially considering both of us having to get new jobs, limited time off, etc.

Welcome to wedding planning— a lot of people will offer you a lot of opinions about things that have nothing to do with you. First best wedding planning advice I can give? Learn to ignore them. YOU know best what is best for you. Never lose sight of that. Good luck!! Smiley smile

I think a long engagement can be great! We have a two and a half year engagement - we got engaged in March 2018 and will get married in September 2020. This allowed us to save up to have the wedding we wanted, and meant that we were guaranteed our top choice vendors. We were also able to lock in cheaper pricing (2019 rates rather than 2020 rates) because we booked early. Wedding planning has been more of a fun and leisurely process, and we aren't as stressed about finances because of all of the time to save up.

I’m a big fan of the long engagement. We got engaged in May 2019 and our wedding is Sept. 25, 2021. We also have 8 weddings to attend in 2020 so far, so I am able to get ideas of what I like and don’t from those weddings. Keep in mind, at least in my area, some of the popular vendors are already booking 2021, so if you have certain vendors in mind, you could possibly lock into lower rates by booking early. My biggest advice is to continuously plan, just slower. To save money there will be some DIYs incorporated into the wedding (centerpieces, etc.) so I’m gathering ideas now so that I’m not rushed. Good luck! Do whatever length engagement feels right to you Smiley smile

A long engagement is amazing! Absolutely 100% would recommend 10/10. You can get everything you want because you can plan ahead! Don't let people talk you out of it. You'll still be together forever either way right?

We will have a 23 month engagement. We have to push it out since my FH brother is getting married next October and we wanted to give his parents a break since they are covering the open bar/rehearsal dinner for both weddings. I struggled with it at first but am finding its a blessing to have a long engagement. We’ve been able to get the 2019/2020 pricing and we have plenty of time to save and pay things off.
